Title: College Faculty: Languages and Cultures

Department/Location:  Languages and Cultures Department / School of Nations

Organizational Relationships:  Reports to Languages and Cultures Department Chair, Humanities Division Head, and Dean of Academics

Summary:  This 9-month position is open to qualified Spanish and/or French language teachers prepared to teach a range of courses in a General Education and major program for undergraduates. These include the first-year language requirement (GE2L), and course offerings in intermediate and advanced language, culture, film, and literature. We prefer a candidate with skills in both languages but will consider faculty with strong competence in Spanish or French.  Teaches 18-21 credits per year. Supports advising, assessment and other activities of the Languages and Cultures Department. Commits to ongoing professional development including scholarship in the field. Contributes to internationalization of the curriculum through committee and collegial activities within a liberal arts education in the spirit of Education at the Principia. This includes Christian Science based “whole person” character education in accordance with Principia’s mission and the Purpose and Policies of The Principia, with daily spiritual work in support of that mission and the ongoing teaching responsibilities.

Work performed – Essential Duties*:

  • Teaches language and culture classes at all levels in a program that includes language, culture, film, and literature of Spain and Latin America or France and the French-speaking world;
  • Teaches independent contract courses and capstones as needed;
  • Takes a role in administrative activities of the language program (orientation and placement testing interviews, overseeing teaching assistants);
  • Continues professional growth to support effective teaching in a greater range of courses through graduate work, participation in professional associations and conferences, research, and self-study.
  • Is an active character educator in accordance with Principia’s mission, providing spiritual support for the work of the program within the context of a liberal arts education;
  • Maintains regular office hours and is readily available to students for advising, consultation, and academic support;
  • Works with colleagues to continue and further develop a strong and varied language program for students with a wide range of skill levels, within the context of the mission and goals of the Languages and Cultures Department.
  • Works actively and collaboratively with others in performing the general business and decision making of the department and academic division
  • Assists in departmental work, including assessment, program review, and development of curriculum

Additional Duties:

  • Serves on academic committees;
  • Supports initiatives on international education across the curriculum;
  • Helps develop and participate in Principia Abroad programs;
  • Is open to collaboration with colleagues in First-Year Experience and other programs;
  • Works with colleagues on record-keeping tasks such as student employment within the department;
  • Works closely with students to further develop their thinking, writing, research, and communication skills;

Qualifications:

  • Active (or pending) membership in the First Church of Christ, Scientist and/or in a Journal-listed branch church or society of the First Church of Christ, Scientist;
  • Christian Science class instruction preferred, but not required;
  • Master’s Degree in Spanish or French or in language teaching, PhD or DML preferred, along with a requirement for a tested superior level of proficiency in speaking and writing skills in Spanish or French; ability to teach another language preferred;  
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish or French (ACTFL national proficiency norms: Educated Native Speaker, Distinguished, or Superior: ILR 3+, CEFR C2);
  • Proven teaching abilities suited to the college level, including familiarity with relevant technology; classroom teaching experience or work with college-aged students preferred;
  • Ability to work with students of a wide range of skill levels and academic preparation;
  • Enthusiasm for teaching the first-year language requirement courses (GE2L) as well as classes at more advanced levels;
  • Significant experience in cultures outside the United States where other languages are spoken;
  • Willingness to address intercultural competence as a core component of language teaching, and interest in helping colleagues develop this component across the curriculum;
  • Acquaintance with ACTFL proficiency criteria and current national norms for developing and assessing language teaching programs.
