Associate Technical Director

The Associate Technical Director assists the Technical Director in the day-to-day operations of the Scenic/Props/Wardrobe department of the Office of the Arts. With over 700 unique shows and events per year, the Associate Technical Director will help ensure superior production values, safety, and smooth technical operations in all OA venues.

- Theatrical and trade vendors.
- Emerson Stage students, supervisors, and production
team.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Create and distribute ground plans, sight line studies and
build drawings for events and productions for all OA theaters as
required.
- Assist Technical director by advancing selected theater events
and productions and providing technical expertise and supervision
to said events and productions.
- Budgeting, tracking, and purchasing for shows, events, and
maintenance.
- Supervise part time technicians and student employees for
Office of the Arts venues including applying and enforcing safe
working practices.
- Serve as Technical Supervisor on Duty (TSoD) for shows, events,
work calls and rehearsals as assigned. The TSoD will be responsible
for backstage safety, implement the Emergency Evacuation Plan when
necessary, communicate with Front of House personnel, communicate
with outside users and crews, maintain and protect house equipment,
enforce house rules, and supervise part-time Emerson employee stage
crew members and stage door supervisors. TSoDs act as the in person
real time client liaison for all OA events, shows, and work
calls.
- Supports Emerson Stage by reviewing drawings, plans, as well as
offering technical advice.
- Support client production staff members by providing access to
and specialized knowledge of OA equipment and facilities and
keeping OA equipment operating efficiently.
- Produce and track maintenance plans including, but not limited
to, rigging system inspections, automation system upkeep and
upgrades, and safety systems.
- Act as interim Technical Director when TD is out/as
needed.
Your Other Responsibilities:
- To serve as master carpenter in planning, drawing, budgeting,
and material acquisition as well as directing all construction and
assembly of sets or special projects.
- Apply safe working practices and facilitate/track safety
trainings and equipment for all employees and students.
- Train all employees, contractors, and students in basic safe
rigging and theater protocol as needed.
- Schedule intermittent, student, and contractor labor based on
the needs of the project.
- Budget estimating, tracking, and purchasing.
Your Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or 4 years' experience in theatrical
supervision and crew management.
- Demonstrable knowledge of theatrical operations and
equipment.
- Demonstrable knowledge in scenic construction.
- Demonstrable proficiency in computer aided drafting.
- Demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft Office or Google
Suite.
- Additional knowledge of theatrical industry and OSHA safety
procedure and practices.
- Additional knowledge and experience with theatrical rigging and
counterweight systems.
You'll be preferred if you have:
- Assistant Technical Director or related experience.
- MiG welding experience.
- Theatrical automation experience.
- Additional knowledge of theatrical
costumes/wardrobe.
- OSHA certification(s)
Work Environment:
- Working at heights and various stage elevations.
- Exposure to noise, dust, heat, chemicals, fumes,
etc.
- Regularly lifting in excess of 50lb.
- Requires long periods of mental concentration.
- Requires the ability to effectively communicate in person and
through communication media.
