Opportunity:
The School of the Arts Admissions Counselor will establish relationships with a diverse audience of prospective students, parents and counselors who have shown an interest in learning more about the wide range of undergraduate programs offered by the School of the Arts. The Admissions Counselor will assist in the coordination of new recruitment techniques to build additional markets to identify and attract potential students. This position will establish relationships with high school teachers and counselors to promote student applications to VCUarts. The Admissions Counselor will serve as a traveler to represent the school at special events such as portfolio days, college fairs and off-campus high school visits nationwide. Additionally, this position will assist with the coordination and operation of VCU events such as open houses, information sessions and counseling sessions with prospective students and their parents. This position will assist in the supervision of a group of approximately 15-20+ student workers who serve as tour guides for the School of the Arts. The Admissions Counselor will support the implementation of strategies established by the VCUarts Dean’s Office and will serve as an integral member of a collaborative team to determine recruitment strategy and communications.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts
degree is preferred.
- Experience energetically and enthusiastically discussing
academic programs with potential students.
- Preferred experience in successfully working with a diverse
range of individuals, including coworkers and potential students
and their families at an accredited college or university.
- Knowledge of undergraduate admissions and recruitment practices
and principles.
- Knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education
admissions and an ability to embrace experimental approaches to
student recruiting is a plus.
- Ability to understand and comply with university, state and
school policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to develop and maintain favorable external and internal
relationships with the various departments both within and outside
of the School of the Arts/VCU.
- Experience in a culturally diverse work environment.
- Exceptional customer service skills.
- Experience in a fast-paced, complex work environment.
- Ability to employ strategic and analytical thinking skills to
achieve departmental objectives.
- Ability to prioritize work, creatively solve problems
independently and use available resources, attend to details and
meet schedule and deadlines.
- Minimum of one year working in a college or university
admissions or recruitment setting and/or experience working in an
art and/or design.
- Strong administrative skillset and working knowledge of
software such as Google Suites and Excel is required. Experience
with Slideroom, Slate and/or SCT Banner is a plus.
- Supports the recruitment and admission of students for the
undergraduate programs in the VCU School of the Arts.
- Serves as a main contact for a diverse audience of students,
parents and high school counselors seeking guidance related to
recruitment and enrollment issues for the School of the Arts.
- Travels to and/or participates in in-person and virtual high
school visits and portfolio day events.
- Responsible for additional off-campus travel procedures, such
as responding to event invitations, shipping of materials to
events, gathering representative evaluations and collecting data
from events.
- Responsible for responding to prospective VCUarts applicants
and their parents through a high volume of emails and phone calls
in a timely, respectful and professional manner.
- Reviews the portfolios of prospective students to provide them
with feedback to improve their artwork and prepare a successful art
school application.
- Establishes and maintains accurate records for prospective
students including entering comments and contact information in the
student database.
- Informs supervisor and admissions team members about the status
of potential students.
- Coordinates faculty and staff communication with potential
students.
- Assists with coordinating on-campus, off-campus and virtual
recruitment events.
- Leads on-campus, off-campus, and virtual information sessions
for prospective students and their families.
- Expands recruitment programs, such as recruitment with current
students and alumni, online portfolio reviews and additional
recruitment events as needed/approved.
- Develops innovative methods to make VCU School of the Arts
recruitment efforts competitive with other top art schools.
- Submits travel-related paperwork in a timely manner.
- Assists in the scheduling and training of the student tour
guide team.
