The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at The George Washington University (GW) in Washington, D.C. is seeking an exceptional candidate for a tenured faculty position at the full professor level, with possible appointment as the Alisann and Terry Collins Professor of Biomedical Engineering, to begin in Fall 2022. This is a leadership opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of a vibrant BME department that has foundational strengths in basic and translational research and student training at all levels.

 

The goals of this position are to further strengthen biomedical engineering at GW through innovative research and education.  Expected efforts are to facilitate faculty collaboration across the schools of engineering, medicine, public health, nursing, and arts and sciences; to stimulate and generate biomedical innovations and translate them into industry and practice; and to invigorate relationships with private industry and government agencies. The successful candidate will be expected to provide service and visionary, collegial leadership that will enhance the Department’s existing research and education missions.

 

The Department and the University 

The George Washington University is in the center of Washington, D.C. The metropolitan area sustains the second largest concentration of research and development activity in the United States, creating a continuing demand for rigorously trained engineers and many research opportunities. With the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and many other agencies, laboratories, and foundations, as well as a rapidly growing biotechnology industry, the DC area is a global hub for biomedical research.

 

The GW Department of Biomedical Engineering consists of 11 full-time faculty, one visiting professor, and eight affiliated and secondary faculty. Approximately 215 students are enrolled in its degree programs. The Department offers B.S., M.S., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering. The University’s medical school and hospital, adjacent to the engineering school, are active collaborators in numerous BME research efforts. The School of Engineering and Applied Science, including BME, occupies the 500,000 square-foot Science and Engineering Hall, featuring a state-of-the art imaging facility, nanofabrication facility, and other modern BME research and instructional laboratories. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to bring a strong program of high-quality externally-funded biomedical research, be an enthusiastic and effective teacher of undergraduate and graduate courses in Biomedical Engineering, and contribute leadership and service to the Department's activities.  BME faculty members actively contribute to an inclusive environment that values diversity and nurtures collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

 

Ample opportunities exist to benefit from new multidisciplinary collaborations across the University, including but not limited to a strong cardiac group within BME and collaborators in the medical school, a prominent Cancer Center housed in the same building, and an excellent cross-departmental Institute for Neuroscience. The new faculty member will also have the opportunity to advance and extend existing relationships with nearby government laboratories and agencies, and the area’s growing biotechnology industry provides ample opportunities for innovation and technology transfer.

 

Basic Qualifications

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related field. Applicants must present clear evidence of an ongoing strong externally-funded research program (as evidenced in part by current grants and by peer-reviewed publications), and the ability to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to work in a collaborative environment as a leader and team member and have experience working with/teaching diverse groups/diverse students.
