PRIMARY PURPOSE :
The Business Advisor is responsible for advising, training, and helping entrepreneurs and small business owners in Deschutes county. The purpose of the position is to aid and inform small business owners about the services COCC offers, engage them in developing a successful business strategy, and provide current and relevant business resources.

Terms of Employment:
  • This is a part-time, 12-month exempt position at pay level 24 in the Administrative salary schedule.
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district.
  • Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.

Essential Functions:
Advising
  1. Provide one-on-one confidential individual advising services to business owners and prospective owners. Listen, analyze and provide recommendations and actions to take.
  2. Provide resources and support in the areas of business and strategic planning, financial analysis, sales and marketing, and operations.
  3. Identify other sources of expertise in the community to assist clients with their specific needs.
  4. Maintain an awareness of both public and private sector resources available for small business owners and make appropriate referrals to those resources.
  5. Work with clients on detailed financial planning with the goal to complete and submit loan applications.
  6. Document activities via Center iC in a timely, accurate, and comprehensive manner. Maintain client files as per Small Business Administration and SBDC guidelines. Provide impact validation information for required SBA reporting including but not limited to success stories.


Teaching and Community
  1. Create instructional materials and serve as an instructor of non-credit business courses and workshops.
  2. Make clients aware of seminars and courses being offered at the Small Business Development Center.
  3. Attend community events and act as a liaison on behalf of the Small Business Development Center.

Other
  1. Attend SBDC staff meetings, when requested.
  2. Proactively learn of new and available business tools and resources.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   9. Ability to travel to Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties.
  10. Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office suite products.
Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Regular office hours are established between 8 am – 5 pm during the workweek. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities.

Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Finance, Accounting or related field.
Experience: Four (4) years of recent practical experience in a small to medium size business, including direct experience with and/or advising about financial statements, budgeting and basic accounting.
