Located in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, an area known for its mountain ranges, hiking trails, and panoramic views, MCLA's North Adams campus benefits from a vibrant creative community and a booming regional economy.
Job Description:
The Department of Fine and Performing Arts at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) invites applications for a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track position in Art History and Museum Studies at the assistant professor rank, to begin September 1, 2022. The successful candidate will have teaching and research expertise focusing on race, human sexuality, or gender through an intersectional lens, reflecting MCLA's ongoing commitment to bring diversity, equity, and inclusion to the curriculum.
Responsibilities include teaching introductory level courses in Art History, Contemporary Art, and Museum Studies, as well as upper division courses more specifically focused in areas of the scholar's specialization. Our ideal new colleague would have a specialization in African American Art, African Diaspora Art, Latin American Art, American Indian/Native American Art, Asian American Art, or similar fields.
This is a new position, created to teach within existing curricula that serve majors in Art and Arts Management, minors in Art History and Public History, as well as the college-wide core curriculum and capstone requirements. As such, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to make a substantial impact in both the Department of Fine and Performing Arts and across the college as a whole. Further, since MCLA is located in culturally vibrant Berkshire County, Massachusetts, it is expected that our new faculty member will have the opportunity to capitalize on the existing relationships between MCLA and the regionally convenient, robust arts and museum communities.
Requirements:
- A PhD in Art History and/or Curatorial Practices
- A strong record of publications or other public creativity/research
- Must be able to communicate complex art ideas and concepts to all levels of students
- Minimum of two years of successful full-time teaching at the undergraduate level
- Museum, gallery, collections, or curatorial experience
- Demonstrated ability to connect students with a thriving creative economy that includes all levels of the arts, from street fairs to world-class museums
- Evidence of commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship in a small liberal arts college environment
- Advising and mentoring experience with undergraduate students
