UTMB is home to the first medical school in Texas, has been at the forefront of educational, research and clinical excellence since 1891. UTMB has graduated more health professionals than any other academic health center in the state. UTMB's John Sealy Hospital in Galveston is home to a Level l Trauma Center, serving a nine-county area with a total population of more than 1.25 million people. UTMB's Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston opened in 2016 and offers private rooms in a patient- and family-centered environment. UTMB also provides services to the adjoining Galveston Hospital for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.  More than 80 UTMB clinics at 30 locations serve the rapidly growing Bay Area and Galveston with access to a full range of primary and specialty care. Our Health System continues to grow, with a recently opened hospital in League City (a partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center) and another new hospital at the Clear Lake Campus in 2019. 

Inaugural Director, Center for Health-System Improvement (CHI).  The UTMB School of Medicine is actively accepting applications for this Inaugural Director of CHI opportunity.  CHI was developed to bridge the gap between health services research and related disciplines, clinical practice, and health system transformation.  The successful candidate will hold either an MD (with advanced methodological training) or a PhD.  He/she will have an established track record of external funding and research in a relevant area such as epidemiology, implementation science, health disparities research, or a related discipline.  Competitive candidates will have an enthusiasm for leading and building multi-disciplinary teams as well as working in partnership with a healthcare delivery system to improve value, reduce variation, and increase quality in tangible ways.  The successful candidate will also have a passion for mentoring trainees and early career faculty.

The Director will be expected to spend 30%-50% of their time directing CHI with the remainder of their effort allocated to personal funded research, clinical care, or teaching in either the School of Medicine or the newly formed UTMB School of Public Health.  He/she will have a primary appointment within a clinical department and a secondary appointment within a Department within the CPH.

Candidate Requirements:

• M.D. with advanced research training or a PhD with 5+ years of experience.
• Established record of funded research in quality improvement, patient safety, health services research, implementation science, or a related discipline.
• Outstanding methodological skills in statistics, health economics, organizational behavior, health services research, or a related discipline.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Eligibility for promotion at the Associate or Full Professor Level
• U.S. Citizenship or Employment Authorization to work in the U.S.

Income Package:  Salary is commensurate with Academic rank, experience, and qualifications.  In addition, UTMB offers a superior benefits package, an excellent retirement program, a relocation allowance as well as other potential incentives.
