Job Description

The Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design, based in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, is seeking applicants for visiting faculty positions in both the undergraduate and graduate programs. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to design as it influences many scales across the built environment, addresses the health and wellbeing of people and populations, and impacts ecosystems. Ideal candidates will be actively exploring and advancing theoretical, practical, and productive knowledge that may be used to construct open, just, sustainable, and beautiful environments for individual and collective life.

The architecture programs at Virginia Tech emphasize experimentation, cross-disciplinary viewpoints, and hands-on learning to develop future design professionals able to think systemically, integrate diverse ideas, and adapt to a constantly changing environment, all the while building a firm foundation in the cultural and physical dimensions of design, urban design, history, theory, building sciences, and practice.

We are on a quest to build a program that accelerates University education towards practices accessible to everyone, that proactively makes meaningful impacts and contributions to social justice and our shared environment by design, and that brings beauty and delight to our everyday lives. As a large program, we have a responsibility and opportunity to make a difference in the architecture profession.

We are looking for people who are committed to diversifying the profession, willing to contribute their experiences to enrich the campus community life, and who want to work with us to design an architectural education that will prepare our students to be active contributors in making the world a better place for everyone.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach a design laboratory/studio, with approximately thirteen (13) contact hours each week and a required course in the professional degree programs. All faculty are expected to participate to the School's life by attending lectures, special events, reviewing student work, and attending faculty meetings. In addition, they will contribute to ongoing program dialogues concerning contemporary architectural education and practice. Positions may be based on the Blacksburg or Washington Alexandria campuses.

The visiting faculty position of Professor of Practice (open rank) is a one-year appointment beginning in August 2022.
