The Department of Art in the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts at Rowan University welcomes applications for a full-time (10-month) tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Graphic Design to join the department September 1, 2022.

The Department of Art at Rowan University offers NASAD-accredited BFA and BA degrees and seeks a faculty colleague with expertise in Graphic Design. Desirable applicants will have experience or skills in User Experience Design, User Interface Design, Integrated Design, Human-centered Design, Design Strategy, Design Thinking, Design Research, and/or Coding for the Web. There is opportunity for interdisciplinary team-taught courses that enroll students from multiple specializations and/or university departments for experiential learning.

The appointee's primary function is to coordinate, teach in, and develop design classes in the Graphic Design Program. This research-based faculty member is expected to maintain an active agenda of creative and/or professional practice and continue creative design scholarship which may include innovation, publishing papers. Efforts to seek external funding are required. We seek academic and practical applicants who maintain and develop professional client-based relationships within industry and scholarly networks to ensure professional growth and opportunities for program graduates.

The full-time faculty in Design will participate in administrative, committee, and student service activities, including development of new curricula and strategic development of the major. The candidate will be asked to contribute to the department and university through service including recruitment, arts outreach on campus, and engagement with the wider professional community.

Essential Criteria

Candidates must:
  • Possess an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Design or a closely related field. Terminal degree is required at the time of appointment.
  • Have a record of effective teaching in design-related coursework at the college level.
  • Demonstrate a record of professional experience and achievement.
  • Be willing to engage in service to the Department of Art, Edelman CCCA, and Rowan University.
  • Be willing to engage in service to the Wider Professional Community
  • Demonstrate a commitment to or record of working with and mentoring diverse students and faculty.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time basis.
Preferred Criteria

Candidates should:
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team member
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Have a record of successful collaboration across disciplines
  • Have experience developing new courses and curricula
  • Be familiar with contemporary design strategy workflows, concepts, and methods of production, including qualitative research, agile development, and rapid prototyping.
  • Maintain and develop professional connections within the design industries and professional associations.
  • Demonstrate engagement with one or more of the following areas:
  • User experience design
  • User interface design
  • Interactive design
  • Design for inclusion and equity
  • Design research
    • Public interest design or design for social impact
    • Co-creation or participatory design
    • Other contemporary topics in design​


The Department of Art is one of six departments in the Ric Edelman College of Communication & Creative Arts that also includes Communication Studies, Journalism, Public Relations & Advertising, Radio, Television & Film, and Writing Arts. CCCA’s goal is to empower people to be storytellers, artists, critical thinkers, and engaged citizens. The college serves nearly 1900 majors through ten B.A.s, two B.F.A.s, and two M.A.s. Additionally, we house first-year writing and public speaking, which serve all Rowan students.
