The Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for Director of the Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies (https://coastal.edu/joynerinstitute). This is a tenure track faculty position that comes with teaching responsibilities. The successful candidate will be hired at the academic rank commensurate with their qualifications.

We welcome applicants from any discipline represented in our college, including Communication, Media, and Culture, English, History, Intelligence and Security Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Languages and Intercultural Studies, Music, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Competitive candidates will hold a terminal degree, will be pursuing a scholarly or creative agenda in a field related to Gullah Geechee or African Diaspora Studies, will have experience teaching at the university level, and will articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Institute. Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated leadership abilities, development or grant writing experience, and a record of community engagement.

Established in 2016, the Joyner Institute is dedicated to a critical understanding of the experiences of Gullah Geechee people and other descendants within the global African diaspora. Coastal Carolina University’s location at the northern tip of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor puts it in a unique position for diaspora study and research. The Institute is the host of the annual International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora conference (IGGAD), a partner institution of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and the recipient of numerous grants focused on Gullah Geechee heritage and history.

Working with the staff of the Dean’s Office, the newly-hired director will, among other duties, uphold the mission and values of the Institute, grow its scope and reach on campus and in the regional community, chair the IGGAD Conference planning committees, lead the newly developed journal publication for Gullah Geechee studies, plan and implement cross-disciplinary experiences for students studying the African diaspora, help grow the minor in African and African Diaspora Studies, preside over the Institute’s advisory faculty and executive councils, apply for grants and other external funds in support of the Institute, serve as the university’s liaison for outreach to the Gullah Geechee community, and develop and maintain new and existing transatlantic partnerships.

Candidates should submit the following to jobs.coastal.edu:

  • A letter of application outlining interest in the position, qualifications (with special focus on their experiences engaging directly with Gullah Geechee communities or communities of the African Diaspora), and a vision for the Institute.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • A diversity statement in which candidates describe their experience with and goals for promoting an inclusive environment that facilitates the success of all students, including those from traditionally marginalized and underserved communities.
  • A list of contact information for three references.

The committee will start reviewing applications on January 17 and continue until the position is filled. It is anticipated that the new director will begin duties on August 15, 2022.
