The University of Utah Graduate School is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Diversity. This professional staff position is part of the leadership team of the Graduate School.
Candidates must have a master’s or higher degree in an area related to diversity education. Candidates should also have demonstrated oral and written communication and interpersonal relations skills. They must be proactive, direct and supervise staff and projects, pay attention to detail, and possess excellent people skills.
Remote Work Opportunity: The Graduate School is currently piloting a hybrid office model, with a minimum of three days on campus. For the first 90 days of employment, the candidate is required to work on campus. Hybrid work schedules may be available after 90 days of employment. The Assistant Dean for Diversity must reside in the state of Utah.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Assistant Dean for Diversity in the Graduate School is responsible for developing, initiating, and engaging in practices supporting graduate students’ recruitment, retention, and graduation from historically underrepresented groups.
The Assistant Dean for Diversity’s efforts can be summarized across four focus areas: 1) recruitment, 2) retention, 3) collection and examination of institutional data for equity analysis and accountability, and 4) leading the discourse on equity and diversity in graduate education.
Special projects or new initiatives are developed at the discretion of the Assistant Dean and serve to advance the academic success of underrepresented graduate students across any of the four focus areas.
The Assistant Dean collaborates with faculty of graduate programs, Directors of Graduate Studies, department chairs, relevant program staff, and university community members. In particular, the Assistant Dean closely coordinates their work with programmatic and leadership activities of the University’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
- The Assistant Dean serves on the following committees: S.J. Quinney Law School Deans Diversity Council, Diversity Collective, and the Senate Committee on Diversity.
- The Assistant Dean manages an operational budget and tracks expenses, performs monthly spending reviews, and completes an annual budget forecast.
The Assistant Dean supervises a full-time Assistant Director and a part-time Administrative Program Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have a master’s degree or higher in an area related to diversity in higher education. The Assistant Dean must possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills due to the importance of partnering and collaborating with faculty, staff, administrators, and graduate students.
The Assistant Dean must be proactive; able to identify, define, and evaluate problems; able to plan and develop immediate and long-term strategies and solutions; have excellent organizational skills; have strong attention to detail, and must be able to direct and supervise projects.
Competitive applicants should have a strong track record of developing successful initiatives related to recruitment and retention of historically underrepresented students, especially African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaskan Native groups. Possessing an understanding of organizational and strategic planning is highly desired. Previous experience with the US Department of Education TRIO programs, such as the McNair Scholars program, is a plus.
