Director of External Affairs

The Director of External Affairs serves as primary interface/liaison/relationship with university outside stakeholders. Such stakeholders include, but are not limited to; local, state and federal government officials, quasi-government organizations as well as local chambers of commerce and other related organizations.

This candidate designs and executes the annual administrative and legislative strategy as it pertains to local, state, and federal governments. Additionally, work closely with the university Communications and Marketing department in coordinating strategic messaging to all external audiences.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create legislative strategy to identify and support, or defeat as necessary local state and federal legislation/regulatory efforts deemed important to the university, its students, faculty, and staff.
  • Oversee and supervise the outside lobbying consultants that represent the university with local state and federal audiences. Assure the ethical compliance of the university and such consultants with applicable local, state and federal law. The position will require the candidate to register as an “in-house” lobbyist with the State of CT.
  • Work closely with the Communications and Marketing department to help craft and deliver University desired messaging and branding to local, state, and federal audiences.
  • As appropriate, support the university Advancement Office by helping to identify and develop future individual and organizational donors.
  • Help position the university and its brand as a private, non-profit economic force for both the Town of East Hartford and the State of Connecticut with appropriate audiences.
  • Working with the Sr. V.P. of Economic & Strategic Development help identify future college initiatives both in learning as well as economic development opportunities that support the school’s mission, its faculty and students.
  • Assist in managing projects and implementation which involve government funding sources.
  • Assist and support external affairs with other Goodwin entities such as the University of Bridgeport and the Goodwin University Magnet Schools System. Coordinate and collaborate with UB President, Magnet Superintendent and other external affairs staff.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience in an external/public affairs role.
  • Strong working knowledge of local state and federal government operations at both the administrative and legislative disciplines.
