Reporting directly to the Dean of Students, the Director of Career Development provides senior-level leadership and direction within Student Affairs with a primary focus on all career development programs and services, including employer development, career counseling, job search assistance, graduate school counseling, portfolio development and review, and internship development. The Director is the face of the Office of Career Development in the community, liaising with employers and internship sites to create opportunities for Cooper Union students. The Director collaborates with Alumni Affairs leadership to ensure that Alumni are involved and engaged in Career Development initiatives and programs for current students, including, but not limited to: Mock Interview Night, Alumni Professional Mentoring, and the CU at Lunch Series. The Director also collaborates across campus to promote a seamless career development and experiential learning experience for our students.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage all aspects of the Office of Career Development.
  • Supervise, train, and lead all staff within Career Development including the Assistant Directors for Career Development and student staff.
  • Prepare, monitor, and ensure compliance with established budget.
  • Oversee all published material for the Office of Career Development within established framework for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Advocate for students’ professional exploration and advancement.
  • Provide individual and group career counseling to all students at The Cooper Union.
  • Organize on-campus career events, including overseeing the annual Career Fair events.
  • Support the Assistant Directors in the administration of the Professional Internship Program.
  • Identify alumni speakers for the CU@Lunch alumni career presentation programs.
  • Coordinate the Mock Interview Night and Professional Mentoring Program with Alumni Affairs.
  • In coordination with the Division of Student Affairs, provide direction and content for the Career Development portion of the website.
  • Participate in professional organizations related to career development.
  • Organize survey and placement information for students and recent graduates.
  • Participate at Cooper Union events such as orientation, parent’s day, open houses, admitted students’ day, etc., discussing and promoting Career Development initiatives and programs.
  • Other duties as assigned within the scope of this position.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Must have demonstrated ability to design, implement, manage, and assess career development programs and services.
  • A background in career counseling or academic advising is preferred.
  • Must be able and willing to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Needs a demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with a diverse population to enhance and further the mission of The Cooper Union.
  • Ability to perform and communicate in a highly professional and effective manner, in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and problem-solving skills to complete work, take responsibility and make decisions based on solid analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with employees, faculty, students, and the public in a collegial, cooperative and respectful manner. 
  • Proficiency is required in the use of relevant technology

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • This position requires a master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling or related field and a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible administrative experience. Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as meeting the minimum qualification of this position.
  • Direct, or transferrable, experience with career development program oversight in engineering, design fields, and the arts.

This is a non-union position.
