Context of the Job:

Under general direction, the Laboratory Coordinator II ensures the efficient maintenance and operation of equipment and facilities in the Epps (https://sites.udel.edu/eppsgroup) and Korley (https://sites.udel.edu/korleygroup) Research Groups in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Delaware. The Laboratory Coordinator II will coordinate equipment purchases and installation and keep equipment inventory and maintenance records. They will interface with outside sales representatives and negotiate pricing/quotes and assist with ordering supplies and reagents. While having no formal teaching responsibilities, the Laboratory Coordinator II will help mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in the Labs. Additionally, the Laboratory Coordinator II will engage in collaborative research within the lab group under limited direction from the PI. The Laboratory Coordinator II also will oversee safety training and safety compliance within the research groups and coordinate data management.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Sets up, tests, calibrates, and maintains equipment.
  • Procures reagents and supplies for the laboratory and maintains financial records for grant budgets.
  • Instructs students on the proper and safe use of equipment and materials.
  • Ensures lab members have up-to-date safety training and assists with on-boarding procedures for incoming laboratory members.
  • Assists in supervision of graduate and undergraduate students conducting research.
  • Assists students in designing experimental tests and oversees their execution.
  • Provides technical leadership and consultation to professional co-workers, collaborators, and students.
  • Develops and conducts independent research projects and protocols.
  • Assists in the preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as proposals and invention disclosures/patent applications.
  • Manages laboratory interactions with University facilities groups and departmental staff.
  • Collaborates with students and faculty on various research projects.
  • Coordinates scientific, organizational, and financial aspects of funded research.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
  • Monitors laboratory data repository to ensure all members' data are properly and regularly backed up.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.



Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field and three years of job-related experience in a scientific research laboratory, or equivalent combination of higher education and experience.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and other researchers.
  • Effective organizational and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with techniques such as DSC, TGA, GPC, NMR, GC-MS, and IR spectroscopy, preferred. Additional familiarity with DMA, rheometer, and tensile testers is a plus.
  • Knowledge of safety practices in academic research labs.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments, to analyze and solve problems, and to prioritize, plan, and organize work.
  • High level of competency with calendaring, collaboration, and communication tools (e.g.,Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office Suite). Experience with social media and website maintenance desired but not required.
  • Experience in research laboratory management is desired but not required.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
