CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The University of Delaware invites applications for the position of Associate Director for Study Abroad. Under the limited direction of the Associate Deputy Provost of the Center for Global Programs & Services (CGPS), the Associate Director, Study Abroad provides direction and leadership for study abroad and domestic travel study programs. The Associate Director works closely with various academic and student affairs offices across the university and third party providers to develop semester and faculty-led study abroad programs (including virtual and hybrid global learning programs); provides a wide range of advising services and resources to prospective, outbound, and returnee study abroad students; manages contractual arrangements and communication with providers and partner institutions; and conducts ongoing assessment of UD programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages and oversees all University of Delaware study abroad and domestic travel study programs, including program proposal screening, application and acceptance procedures, policy development and implementation, pre-departure orientation for faculty and students, health insurance issues, safety and security, faculty support, post-program evaluation, and troubleshooting and crisis management as needed.
  • Provide leadership in the execution of day-to-day program activities as appropriate to program objectives and ensure compliance with University, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  • Monitor and improve the quality and consistency among study abroad programs and policies, and investigate possible third-party providers for semester programs, negotiate agreements/MOUs, and work with relevant academic units to implement such programs.
  • Provides financial analysis and consultation as it relates to the continuation or enhancement of specific study abroad programs.
  • Supervises study abroad coordinators including oversight of work assignments and performance.
  • Direct the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of programs and services provided to support students studying on UD programs; manages data collection and analysis for assessment and evaluation of study abroad programs and generates statistical reports for CGPS and the UD community.
  • Convenes the Risk and Security Assessment Committee (RSAC) to review proposals for UD-sponsored student travel to countries under elevated U.S. State Department rating.
  • Establishes and implements short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates program effectiveness; effects changes required for improvement of study abroad programs.
  • Represents the University externally to organizations, students, and their parents, and/or the general public.
  • Leads the recruitment and promotion efforts as it relates to study abroad programs. Actively recruits faculty to direct study abroad programs through annual workshops and other programs.
  • Oversees the evaluation of, contracts with, and programs associated with third party providers of study abroad.
  • Manages student exchange agreements with foreign institutions.
  • Reviews, develops, and implements policies and procedures for UD study abroad programs; represents the Associate Deputy Provost as needed on University planning and policy-making committees.
  • Provides oversight to the Delaware Diplomats scholarship and peer mentoring program
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree, Ph.D., or Ed.D. preferred, in international studies, student affairs, higher education, or a related field.
  • Six years of related experience in study abroad administration, programming, and advising, with strong preference for an individual who has both led a study abroad program and participated in one as a student.
  • Previous experience working with study abroad providers and exchange partners is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty and other campus stakeholders is highly desirable.
  • Experience as a classroom instructor at the college or university level is highly desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations to students, faculty, and various audiences on campus.
  • Strong analytical and project management skills, and demonstrated use of computer applications, database systems, and web-based technology.
  • Experience in recruiting students for study abroad trips strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required, as well as employee development and performance management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and foster a cooperative environment.
  • Experience organizing, examining, and re-engineering operations and procedures; formulating policy; establishing priorities; and developing and implementing new strategies.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart information to a range of clientele and/or media sources.
  • Ability to evaluate, design, and implement assessment strategies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international higher education practices and cultural variances.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, standards, policies, and procedures within specialty area.
  • Knowledge of financial analysis, budget preparation and management.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
