The Department of Physics and Optical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank in physics starting August 15, 2022.
Requirements for the position include an earned PhD in physics or a closely related field. All but dissertation or near degree completion will be considered if in-hand by the start date. The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory, calculus-based physics courses and labs and core and elective physics courses offered by the department. The institute highly values exceptional teaching and therefore evidence of potential, or demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, is a plus.
The department offers B.S. degrees in physics, engineering physics and optical engineering and an M.S. degree in optical engineering. The department also offers a minor in astronomy. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a research program in Physics. Collaboration with other faculty in the department is strongly encouraged. The Institute places a high value on engaging students from traditionally underrepresented groups, and candidates from these groups are especially encouraged to apply.
The department operates modern laboratories that support teaching, active research, design, and development projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students at all levels usually engage in research projects throughout the academic year and in summer. Facilities include a modern observatory on campus, a clean room facility with many modern devices and material testing equipment (including a new field-emission scanning electron microscope) in the Micro-Nanoscale Devices System facilities.
Essential job responsibilities include teaching and advising students, continued professional development, and service to the department, Institute and professional community. Applicants should submit via https://jobs.rose-hulman.edu a cover letter, a curriculum vitae or resume, a statement addressing teaching philosophy and potential research projects with undergraduate students, a list of three references and a statement regarding their commitment to diversity and inclusion. Applicants who advance through the initial screening will be asked for three references to submit recommendation letters. Review of applications will start January 15th and will continue until the position is filled.
