The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Health Information Management invites applications for a position to expand our educational and research activities in health information management and health informatics. We are seeking applicants for Assistant Professor position, within the tenure stream. The position is open immediately and the search will continue until the position is filled. Successful candidates will have research expertise that can advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) and informatics in healthcare. We are particularly interested in candidates with research interests in Responsible AI and AI Bias in Healthcare. We are interested in a broad range of responsible and ethical AI areas that include but are not limited to AI bias and mitigation in healthcare, human-in-the-loop machine learning in healthcare, AI and Privacy, AI impact on clinical practices, socially responsible AI, AI ethics and accountability, and potential of AI to advance health equity.

The position is a full-time tenure stream at level of Associate or Assistant Professor depending on the individual qualifications and experience. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Development and leadership of externally funded independent research
  • Participation in teaching in undergraduate and/or graduate programs in Health Information Management and Health Informatics for the areas of their research and expertise
  • Service on committees relevant to the research and teaching mission of the Department, School, and University.


Health Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh is one of the leading academic programs in the nation. The Department offers a B.S degree in Health Informatics and an M.S. in Health Informatics and participates in the PhD program, which is part of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Our department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) for our undergraduate HIM program and our Graduate RHIA track.

The department has recently established a Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program with tracks in health Data Science (DS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Healthcare Supervision and Management (HSM), and general Health Informatics. The program also offers certificates in Health Data Analytics, Health Information Cybersecurity, Leadership in Health Information, and Revenue Cycle Management.  The programs are offered both on-campus and online. The department has also developed a new curriculum at the undergraduate program (BS in Health Informatics) with an emphasis in health data science and health informatics.

Currently the department’s research is focused on telehealth and mobile health, digital health intervention, data analytics, machine learning, information security and privacy, electronic health records, classification systems, quality of life technologies, natural language processing and data mining. 

The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) ranks 5th among U.S. universities in competitive grants awarded to faculty members by the National Institutes of Health. The University has multiple institutional research resources and centers, for example, the Biomedical Mass Spectrometry Center (BioMS Center), the Center for Medicine and the Microbiome (CMM), and the Center for Vaccine Research (CVR). Pitt's Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is one of twelve initial recipients of a Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), funded by the NIH Roadmap Initiative. It maintains a research data warehouse (RDW) that contains data for more than 5 million patients longitudinally. Pitt also provides comprehensive institutional computing resources. Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) is a joint effort of Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh that provides university researchers with access to several of the most powerful systems for high-performance computing, communications and data storage available to scientists and engineers nationwide for unclassified research. Center for Research Computing (CRC) provides different types of hardware for different advanced computing needs for faculties, including SMP nodes, HTC nodes, MPI nodes, and GPU nodes.

The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) is committed to action-oriented policies to address inequity and systemic problems that require complex solutions. The school has recently appointed an Associate Dean to lead a newly created Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (OEI&CE).  The university provides a wealth of opportunities for collaboration in the area of AI Bias including collaboration within SHRS, other schools of health sciences, as well as other areas in the university such as School of Computing and Information (SCI). 



Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

  • High potential for research leadership and have a strong commitment to high-quality education. We are particularly interested in candidates with potential involvement in funded research.
  • A Ph.D. degree (or other doctorate degrees) in health informatics, computer and information sciences, mathematics and statistics, health service administration, or other relevant disciplines. 
  • Experience in teaching and advising undergraduate and graduate students, and interests in developing innovative health informatics programs both on-campus and online.
