SAIS Online & Distance Learning is seeking anAssociate Director Of Instructional Design. This role will serve as the lead Instructional Designer while supervising the instructional designers and ensuring timeline and quality completion of assigned projects. Reports to and assists the executive director in the managing daily operations and other tasks as assigned. Analyze, design, develop, and implement moderately complex online courses, web-based training, and face-to-face training curricula. Provide vision, leadership and coordination in designing, developing, and delivering online courses delivered by the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

Additionally the Associate Director of Instructional Design will support and guide faculty in strategic use and implementation of educational technology in online, hybrid, or face-to-face courses. Will work collaboratively with the SAIS faculty, administrators and staff in the design and development of online programs.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

80% of the Time:

  • Supervise Instructional Design and/or instructional technology staff.
  • Conduct quarterly performance reviews of supervised staff.
  • Guide and mentor supervised staff.
  • Manage project and task assignments of staff.
  • Ensure projects are completed on-time and in budget.
  • Partner with SAIS faculty in the development of instructional materials that are functional, effective, and informed by sound instructional design principles.
  • Proactively consult with faculty and subject matter experts to identify and obtain learning objectives and content to revise existing courses and develop new courses.
  • Write and develop content as needed.
  • Collaborate with ODL staff and SAIS faculty in the systematic design and creation of online courses, course content, activities and assessments.
  • Provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, assessments, and online interactive activities.
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories and models and their potential application to instructional opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1976 and Title III for the American with Disability act.
  • Ensure design & style consistency for standardization, branding, normalization, and accessibility.
  • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Manages multiple design projects concurrently. Create project plans and deliver timely results.
  • Plan, develop, and teach faculty and staff workshops and other training on the effective use and integration of technology tools for online and blended delivery. Educate faculty and SME's on instructional/educational technology capabilities one-on-one or by conducting workshop or seminar.

15% of the Time:

  • Conduct project related risk assessments and skills gap analysis.
  • Coordinate activities within client budget and time schedule for projects. Provide cost estimates when needed. May provide information for budget development.

5% of the Time:

  • Other assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum Design, or other related discipline is required with a minimum of 1 year of professional experience designing, developing, and managing online, blended, and/or other technology-mediated instruction.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing and supervising instructional design and/or instructional technology staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree or higher in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Curriculum Design, or other related discipline.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
  • 2 or more years of managerial experience.
  • Experience working in a similar capacity in an online education environment.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must have knowledge of current and emerging instructional design approaches and technologies.
  • Must have proven ability to adapt and learn new procedures and software programs.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the pedagogy of online teaching and learning as well as current and emerging technologies.
  • Must possess e effective communication skills to communicate frequently and effectively with various project collaborators.
  • Familiarity with graphic design development tools appropriate for creating materials for and supporting online instructional efforts.
  • Basic knowledge of streaming audio and video, compression methods, file types, and formats.
  • Experience with web-based course management tools (such as Blackboard or other LMS) and online conferencing software (such as Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting, Zoom, etc.).
  • Advanced Microsoft PowerPoint and Word skills.
  • Competency with Microsoft Excel, basic HTML editing, and image manipulation software, such as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
  • Advanced knowledge of course authoring tools, including Articulate Storyline.
  • Advanced writing and proofreading skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of audio and video planning, production, recording, editing, and publishing.
