The Department of Neurology is seeking aResearch Specialist who will work with supervisor or independently to perform projects related to research that will involve a broad range of technical expertise.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Follows established molecular biology procedures or protocols to perform experiments, which will involve DNA preparation, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, ELISA, data analyze, and data management.
  • Manage the breeding of mouse strains.
  • Performs the processing of samples, performs quality control, and maintenance duties.
  • Designs experiments and assists in importing new techniques to the lab.
  • Exercises independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.
  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Uses various software applications packages to assemble, manipulate, and/or format data or test reports.
  • Responsibilities include the daily operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, of laboratory equipment and computers.
  • Documents Biosafety-related procedures including chemical and biosafety records and compliance, management of waste disposal and animal use protocol.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field with relevant experience including undergraduate projects.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous research experience in molecular biology, or closely related fields, is a plus.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent data organization and communication skills are required.
  • Previous experience with scientific data analysis software will be advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office is desired.
