Job Description

Jointly reporting to the Chief of Staff for Campus Planning, Infrastructure and Planning (CPIF) and the Divisional HR Director for the SVPCBO Enterprise, the Sr. Human Resources Manager has primary responsibilities for leadership of Human Resources programs and operations within Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities in accordance with university and state policies and procedures.

The Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities leads the care, maintenance and development of Virginia Tech’s campuses in Blacksburg, Roanoke, and the Greater Washington, D.C., metro area; the university’s research and agricultural facilities located throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia; and the Steger Center for International Scholarship located in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland. The division provides safe, inclusive, accessible, sustainable, mission-centric, partner-focused, and cost-effective spaces that preserve, foster, complement, and advance Virginia Tech’s distinct senses of place and service.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, performance management and planning, compensation analysis, recruitment, employee relations, talent development, coordination of training, and human resources analysis and reporting. The Sr. Human Resources Manager collaborates with leadership across all divisional units to develop and implement staffing, retention, recognition, performance, organizational design, HR data analytics, career development plans, and other related programming to address current and future needs of the division. The Sr. Human Resources Manager also manages a team of HR professionals responsible for the daily HR operations, HR transactional requirements, and support of the over 500 employees within the CPIF division.

The Sr. HR Manager also:
• Drives HR programming in CPIF to assist the division in meeting its strategic goals
• Designs, establishes, and manages innovative programs and initiatives to create effective recruitment, compensation, and performance development programs in CPIF
• Provides consultative and strategic solutions in response to employee relations related issues within CPIF
• Assesses organizational health and leads actions with the management team to address opportunities that are identified
• Champions a responsive workforce that embraces a culture of continuous improvement, self-assessment, and accountability in a dynamic environment.
• Deploys, accepts, and acts on all mechanisms of customer feedback to achieve results and effect change.
• Fosters a culture of diversity and inclusivity
• Works and collaborates with Division of Human Resources and the Sr. Divisional HR Director for the SVPCBO Enterprise on leading and implementing university wide HR initiatives within the Division of IT.
• Manages a team of HR professionals responsible for HR operations and delivery of HR services in the Division.

The position will require evening and/or weekend responsibilities during peak times. This position is designated as “Emergency Personnel”. Must be available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to provide support during planned, or emergency situations or events to include being physically on site if deemed necessary.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Management, Organizational Development or related field, or significant, and equivalent, related professional experience.
• Experience providing HR leadership and consultative guidance to management in a large/complex organization.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
• Demonstrated experience in multiple functions such as staffing/recruitment, compensation, employee relations, rewards and recognition, performance management, and organizational development.
• Exceptional communication skills, interpersonal skills, diplomacy, and the ability to effectively interact and build trusted relationships with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Demonstrated commitment to exceptionally responsive, consistent, and transparent service delivery to all constituents
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects; excellent organizational, leadership, and delegation skills; and ability to work collaboratively.
• Must have strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills to manage complex tasks and/or those that require balancing competing interests.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with ability to see patterns, be a fast thinker, and make decisions with strong attention to accuracy, detail, and local context.
• Demonstrated patience, reliability, composure, and stability under pressure as well as a strong personal ethics commitment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Human Resources experience, preferably in a management role, in an industrial/etc. environment.
• Advance degree in related field or equivalent combination of training
• Experience managing or leading teams with successful results.
• Experience with online applicant tracking systems.
• Knowledge of process improvement and change management strategies.
• Experience with Virginia Tech human resources policies and procedures.
• SHRM or other applicable HR designation preferred.

Please note the salary range for this role is $90K - $100K.

Additional Information

• Ability to travel to and inspect various work sites which may involve entering construction sites or traversing uneven terrain, walking, standing, bending, climbing ladders, reaching, pushing/pulling. May need to safely move and handle 50 or more pounds.
• Must have an acceptable and safe driving record, Must have a driver's license check, Emergency Personnel - health & safety related, Other (Describe Below)
• Work hours are typically M – F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. however additional hours or modified schedule may be required to meet the needs of the department.
• This position is designated as “Emergency Personnel”. Must be available twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week to provide support during planned, or emergency situations or events to include being physically on site if deemed necessary.
• Some travel may be required which may include overnight stays.
• As situation dictates, must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• This position meets the criteria for issuance of a mobile communication device (such as radio, cell-phone, I-pad, I-pod, pager, etc.). Devices issued are the responsibility of the employee and are to be returned in satisfactory condition upon separation of employment. Devices are to be used according to supervisor instruction and according to relevant policies.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
