The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional Biology instructor to teach advanced high school students.  Candidates must have a Master’s degree, PhD preferred, in biology or a related field.  All fields will be considered.  We especially welcome applications from candidates with specialization or teaching experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, epidemiology, marine biology, molecular biology, pathology, or zoology. Position begins August, 2022.

Applicants should have experience teaching biology at a college or advanced high school level.  Biology courses offered in our programs include AP biology, AP environmental science, anatomy and physiology, botany, evolution, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, and neuroscience.  The successful candidate should be prepared to teach AP Biology, which is a two-semester course, comparable to a year-long introductory biology course in a collegiate environment.  The candidate will also have opportunities to develop and teach upper-level biology courses based upon their specialty.

Successful teachers at GSSM have an understanding of gifted learners, an enthusiasm for teaching motivated and talented high school students, and knowledge of effective pedagogy.  Demonstrated desire to work collegially to create unique and innovative experiences for students within and outside the classroom is a must. Committee meetings, student activity advising, and occasional evening/weekend commitments are a regular part of faculty responsibilities.

Courses at GSSM are modeled on a college-like schedule and teaching environment. We offer courses to students in-person at our campus in Hartsville, SC as well as virtually to students across the state of South Carolina. The successful candidate will be expected to work from our campus in Hartsville, SC and should be prepared to teach both online and residential courses. Experience teaching in virtual or hybrid environments is a plus. A teaching certificate is not required.

This is a permanent, full-time (10-month) teaching position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.

To apply, please assemble, in a single pdf file, a letter of application, CV, teaching statement, a document addressing how your experience and aspirations are consistent with the SCGSSM mission statement and the content of our residential/virtual programs, and the South Carolina employment application available at www.scgssm.org/employment. Forward these materials to careers@gssm.k12.sc.us. Please include the word “Biology” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin January 15, 2022.
