Job Summary

The University of Colorado is hiring for a Technical Director. This position will support the success of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.

For over 60 seasons, the Colorado Shakespeare Festival has delighted audiences with classic theatre under the stars.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival is a professional theatre company in association with the University of Colorado Boulder. Since 1958, the festival has celebrated and explored Shakespeare and his continuing influence and vitality through productions of superior artistic quality, education and community engagement.

CSF strives to preserve the classics of the past and pursue the classics of the future. Fueled by artistry and scholarship, the festival seeks to expand the cultural richness of the region by inspiring, challenging and cultivating the imagination of audiences and artists.

Plays are performed beneath summer night skies in the historic Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre and in the newly renovated indoor University Theatre.

The festival’s education programs reach tens of thousands of school children each year through camps, classes and outreach performances that connect them with the continuing tradition and importance of Shakespeare.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

• Oversee scene shop operations for four-show season in two theatres including planning, build, load-in, repertory changeovers and maintenance of scenery / props throughout the season.
• Creation of all scenic shop drawings.
• Consult with Production Manager on technical and budgetary feasibility of designs, realization of designs within budget and scheduling, supervising build, installation, rigging, and strike of sets, safety training and oversight, maintenance of shop and equipment.
• Work with the Production Manager to ensure deadlines are met within budget and time constraints.
• Supervise and direct two Assistant Technical Directors.
• Supervise and instruct production crew and interns on theatrical skills and best practices.
• Perform skilled carpentry work through the use of a variety of materials related to the construction of theatrical scenery as needed.
• Remote participation in production and design meetings, scenic bid process, construction drawings, and crew hiring.

What We Can Offer

The hourly rate is $20.00

What We Require

• One year of related experience demonstrating the required skillsets.
• Valid driver's license and ability to drive a 26’ box truck.

• Ability to maintain high quality standards and a safe and supportive work environment while working on a tight time line.

What We Would Like You To Have

• Professional experience in theatrical technical direction.
• 3 years experience in a supervisory role.
• At least three years professional experience and/or advanced training in stage carpentry, welding, rigging and safety.
• AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks proficiency to produce clear working drawings for shop staff.
