As a school recognized for academic excellence and committed to the holistic experience of our students, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) invites applications for the Director of Wellness Counseling.  This professional will lead the school’s wellness counseling unit including, but not limited to, clinical evaluation, therapeutic interventions, crisis stabilization, and coordination of services for our residential students.  This position also provides programming and training for staff and students independently or in collaboration with other departments or student organizations.  The position partners with mental health professionals throughout the state in supporting students.  Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to equity in education and the ability to reach diverse populations.  This is a 12-month full-time position reporting to the Vice President for Student Development and Professional Growth.

Essential job functions comprise some of the following:

  • Provide clinical mental health counseling services to students including crisis assessment and management.
  • Make recommendations and referrals for necessary counseling services in home communities when structured or intense clinical services are needed. This includes follow-up with providers as appropriate.
  • Provide services to GSSM parents during orientation and prospective student visitation programs as well as continued supports to enhance the student’s and family’s success at GSSM.  This might include consultation with health care providers beyond the Governor’s School.
  • Serve on-call for after-hour emergencies, which may require returning to the campus including weekends.
  • Coordinate awareness programs related to empathy, mental wellness issues, and related topics designed to promote the development of emotional intelligence among the school community: students, faculty, and staff.
  • Collaborate with school nurses and residence life staff as needed to ensure holistic care of students.
  • Encourage student involvement, participation, and leadership that emphasize positive citizenship and responsibility especially around GSSM’s community standards.

Qualifications:  This position requires a master’s or doctorate degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field that allows for South Carolina state credentialing as a licensed professional within the discipline with 10 years of progressive counseling experience, preferably with young adults.  Supervisory experience is also preferred.  Successful candidates should have experience in working with parents and diverse populations.  A current professional license is required.  GSSM understands the importance and impact of diversity and a commitment to equity and inclusion toward our future growth so we welcome all applicants, especially those who embrace this aspect of our mission.

This is a full-time 12-month position with State benefits and salary commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.  The preferred position start date is June 1, 2022, but those who may be available earlier should not be deterred from applying.
