Elon University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity.  The Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education (CREDE) at Elon University advances the conversation on student diversity education campus-wide to develop intercultural competence and provides race and ethnicity related advocacy, services, and programs to promote the intellectual achievement, personal success, and social belonging of all students, faculty, and staff, particularly those from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities. As part of CREDE, El Centro provides an environment to engage in celebration, collaboration, dialogue, and research to propel advocacy, appreciation, and academic achievement within the Latinx/Hispanic community. It also serves as an educational and cultural base for all students, faculty, and staff members through engagement, cultural awareness, and community service with the Latinx/Hispanic community.

The Assistant Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Diversity Education will work in a seven-person team to support diversity education, programs, and events. This position shares the responsibility for the daily operations of El Centro including supervising, mentoring, and advising students. The Assistant Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education has the primary responsibility of supporting Elon's current and emerging racial and ethnic diverse populations, on campus, with particular expertise and experience working with Latinx/Hispanic students.

The Assistant Director ensures that services and initiatives are provided that contribute to and address the intellectual and social needs of Latinx/Hispanic students. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with administration, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community to create a supportive inclusive environment that affirms Latinx/Hispanic students, faculty, and staff and enhances and promotes a campus-wide understanding of Latinx/Hispanic identities and cultures. This is a full-time, 12-month position, reporting to the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education.

Education Requirements:
Completed master's degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field and 1-2 years of experience (including graduate assistantships/apprenticeships) in diversity, equity, and inclusion work or a related functional area in higher education strongly preferred, or completed bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of experience required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Assistant Director assists in the management of the overall operations of El Centro. This work includes but is not limited to:

  • Serving as one of the support systems for international and U.S. born and raised Latinx/Hispanic students, faculty, and staff, providing race and ethnicity related advocacy, services, and programs to promote identity development, intellectual achievement, personal success, and social belonging.
  • Creating, implementing, marketing, and assessing programs and events that support Latinx/Hispanic students across different national, ethnic, and racial backgrounds while providing programs for Latinx/Hispanic studentsto deepen their understanding of how race and ethnicity intersects with other identities.
  • Developing, in collaboration with other departments (Residence Life, Gender & LGBTQIA Center, Latin American Studies, Counseling Center, SPDC, GEC, among others) and student organizations (Latinx/Hispanic Union, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Lambda Upsilon Lamba, etc.), educationally transformative programs, services and activities that result in cultural awareness and appreciation for diversity and cross-cultural engagement centered on Latinx/Hispanic cultures and identities, as well as on the students' needs and interests.
  • Leading El Centro's programmatic initiatives and committees including but not limited to Gala Latina, Seniors Take Flight, Hispanic Heritage Month, etc.
  • Promoting the study of conversational Spanish and culture among all Elon populations, including Latinx/Hispanic students, and arranging local community-based Spanish language immersion internship opportunities for Elon students, faculty and staff who wish to practice and improve Spanish language skills while providing community volunteer services.
  • Serving as the liaison between El Centro and organizations that support the local Latinx/Hispanic community.
  • Supervising El Centro's Student Coordinators and implementing training programs for them.
  • Monitoring and updating El Centro website and social media accounts.
  • Advising and supporting the Latinx/Hispanic Union and other related student groups or initiatives.
  • Serving as the liaison to other offices such as Admissions and New Student and Transition Programs onLatinx/Hispanic recruitment and student engagement.
  • Supporting welcome and orientation gatherings and events for Latinx/Hispanic faculty and staff.
  • In partnership with the Assistant Dean and Director of the CREDE, providing support for student with different documentation statuses.
  • Developing and implementing anti-racist educational programming as well as diversity education that enhances the Elon community's understanding of and ability to interact effectively and appropriately with various social identities.
  • Supporting ongoing campus committees and initiatives at both the divisional and institutional level related to student success, belonging, and inclusive excellence.
  • Assists in the coordination of signature programs and represent the CREDE at university programs and events.
  • Is available for occasional weekend travel or evening work related to student leadership conferences, retreatsand educational programs.
  • Serves as an Administrator On-Call (AOC) in the campus-duty rotation (two weekends when university is insession and one week when not in session, per year).
  • Has a valid driver's license and is insurable by the University's carrier.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity, & Diversity Education.
