The University of Rhode Island seeks candidates for a tenure-track, academic-year appointment (50% research, 40% teaching, 10% service) at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Biological Sciences. The position is part of a hiring initiative to strengthen the scholarship of teaching and learning, with a special emphasis on student success and retention in STEM disciplines.

 

We seek candidates interested in developing a strong and externally funded research program in undergraduate biology education. The successful candidate will conduct research, support and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach a course in introductory biology as well as upper-level or graduate courses related to their interests. The successful candidate will couple their research and teaching efforts to improve teaching and learning within their own classroom while possibly partnering with other STEM instructors. We are especially interested in candidates with research experience and/or interests relating to building equity and inclusion in STEM education, and candidates with a demonstrated commitment to addressing the systemic biases and significant challenges experienced by students historically excluded from science.

 

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or a related field by June 2022. Successful candidates will have an excellent record of scholarship (peer-reviewed publications) and teaching, as well as a demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.

 

Position is academic year, tenure-track, permanent. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Perform discipline-based education research (DBER) in biological sciences with an emphasis on undergraduate education. Broadly disseminate research findings in peer-reviewed publications in discipline-appropriate journals or conference proceedings. Secure external research funding sufficient to conduct research and support graduate and undergraduate students. Teach introductory biology and additional relevant courses based on interests and apply evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies to improve student success.  Employ strategies to improve the success and retention of students historically excluded from science.  Perform departmental, college, and university service as required.
