Job Description

The Office of the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer (SVPCBO) seeks a Senior Financial Analyst who will provide reporting and analysis in the areas of business and data analytics, budget analysis, assessment and accountability, risk management, and process improvement.


Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance, the Sr. Financial Analyst will have primary responsibility of providing business analytics and reporting for the SVPCBO senior management area. The Sr. Financial Analyst will support management in the development and integration of data analytics and business intelligence necessary for supporting the mission, vision, strategies, objectives, and goals of the SVPCBO senior management area. Other duties will include:

• Developing, implementing, and maintaining tools to extract and examine data from multiple sources.
• Collaborating with leadership and stakeholders to develop and maintain reporting used for decision-making, collection of feedback, and evaluation.
• Analyzing and manipulating data for presentations and reporting.
• Engaging in efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of processes and system data collection.
• Creating meaningful financial reports and analyses related to budget planning and monthly financial reporting.
• Developing ad hoc reports in an accurate and timely manner.
• Critically analyzing business needs and making recommendations to enhance unit capabilities and executing creative approaches to solving complex financial issues.

This position is an integral part of the finance and enterprise operations team and will interact with the fiscal team and support services function within the unit. The Sr. Financial Analyst must be detail, action, solution, and results oriented; have a passion for quality, data accuracy, and continuous improvement; and have experience collaborating with stakeholders from all levels of a large, decentralized organization. This position is expected to identify responsibilities independently while maintaining effective communication.

This position can accommodate a hybrid telework arrangement.

Required Qualifications

• A Master’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, data analytics, business information technology, or a related field or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with significant experience or training.
• Experience analyzing large sets of data and summarizing trends and results.
• Proficiency in business intelligence and analytical tools (e.g. MicroStrategy, Power BI).
• Advanced skills with current Microsoft Office software with expertise specifically with Excel.
• Exceptional writing, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
• Experience with policies and procedures for ensuring internal controls as well as the security and integrity of data.
• Ability to interact and build trusted relationships with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Demonstrated experience researching and preparing complex executive level documents, reports, and presentations on a variety of strategic topics.
• Ability to make decisions utilizing strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with careful attention to accuracy and detail.
• Ability to successfully handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects, excellent organization skills, and ability to work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in the management and business practices of higher education institutions.
• Knowledge of Virginia Tech organizational structures, policies, and procedures and its university financial and administrative information systems.
• Experience with budgeting and/or financial planning within higher education.
• Experience in process improvement projects.
