Basic Function:
Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of Human Resources, the Learning and Development Manager leads and supports key learning and development (L&D) initiatives and projects at California Lutheran University, at both the strategic and tactical level. The manager leads determining L&D needs, designs, develops and implements strategic L&D solutions for the university. The manager leads a variety of L& D programs, such as new employee onboarding, leadership development, and employee engagement, etc. The position also collaborates with Director, HSI and DEI Programs to support the university's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Representative Duties:
  • Design and manage strategies for learning, development, and coaching programs.
  • Lead the analysis and assessment of L&D needs for the university; create annual training plans. and timelines, determine resource needs, and develop curriculum that align with the University, divisions and departments’ objectives. E
  • Determine most effective instructional methods and tools based on needs assessment and/or specified learning needs including individual training, group instruction, demonstrations, meetings, eLearning, workshops, refreshers, in person, virtual, and/or self-study. E
  • Design, develop, evaluate and update curriculum content, materials, manuals, tests and related training aids to ensure optimum effectiveness. E
  • Collaborate with management throughout the organization to deliver and/or coordinate training covering a range of topics in areas such as functional, operational, management and leadership, and professional. E
  • Manage administrative functions necessary to deliver, document, and track programs, which includes scheduling, employee notification, and arranging for facility set-up. E
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of L&D classes and programs, and make recommendations for changes and improvement. E
  • Provide consulting and project management services to departments and client groups. E
  • Promotes L&D products and services; raises awareness of university training resources.
  • Leads and/or participates in various L&D projects as:


1) New employee on-boarding: develop and administer new employee onboarding program; assist supervisors and managers orient and welcome new employees to the University; analyze timeline check-in feedback. E
2) Employee Engagement: analyze survey data to identify drivers of engagement, and actions to maintain/grow engagement. E
3) Leadership Development: develop and provide learning resources, conduct and debrief assessments, facilitate development planning, project manage key leadership programs and learning pathways, and co-consultation. E
4) Performance Coaching/Employee Development: develop and provide learning resources that support ongoing performance coaching conversations between managers and employees for setting goals and objectives, assessing performance, identifying growth and development opportunities and discussing career interests. E
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of current changes within legal, regulatory, and technology environments which may affect operations: ensure management and staff are informed of any changes and update in a timely manner. E
  • Support key DEI initiatives for L&D, such as employee experience, culture initiatives, and learning programs. E
  • Establish and maintain appropriate network of professional contacts; maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations and publications; attend meetings, seminars and conferences and maintain continuity of any required or desirable certifications. E
  • Establish and streamline L&D policies and procedures. E

Minimum Qualifications:
Any Combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in Adult Learning, Organizational Psychology, or Human Resources related discipline and six years of experience in learning, talent development, program management, Employee Engagement or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Adult Learning, Organizational Psychology, or Human Resources related fieldExperience working in a learning and development organizationPrior consulting or professional services experience
