Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Research Areas: Smart and Connected Communities; Open Environmental Data & Sciences; Community Research; Broadening Participation

This postdoctoral fellowship position involves conducting research on Environmental Data Justice for a project titled: Smart Sensing as Relational Sensing: Environmental Data Justice in Boston and Beyond. Specifically this researcher will be developing the theory and practice of relational approaches to environmental data justice. Relational approaches to environmental justice (EJ) move beyond mapping where harm is occurring by also mapping communities that produce and benefit from pollution (e.g. via commuter traffic and local industry). This project investigates whether relational representations of environmental data will more accurately reflect accountability for environmental, economic, and historical harm, and point us toward horizons of desired, environmentally just futures.

Responsibilities:
Through a critical design project, based on in-depth ethnographic research this project reimagines EPA's Environmental Justice Screening Tool. First, this fellow will redefine what constitutes air quality data by incorporating and centering relational factors. Second, the fellow will collaborative design relational visualizations that illustrate the driving causes of pollution rather than pollution itself. Finally, this will be a transdisciplinary undertaking. As such the relational EJ tools will be designed to be applicable across academic disciplines, political stakeholders, and community members to identify new paths of engagement and desired outcomes.

This two-year position is supported through the Computing Innovation Fellowship program (CI Fellows) via the Computing Research Association. The postdoctoral fellow will be hosted by Dr. Sara Wylie as part of the Wylie Environmental Data Justice Lab and the Northeastern Sociology department. They will also participant in the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute.

Qualifications:
PhD in Science and Technology Studies (STS) or equivalent field is required by the appointment start date. Experience with data visualization, User Experience (UX) design, smart cities, Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) and ethnography is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Salary Grade:
10
