Position summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to hire a faculty member with research interests in the statistical and data science aspects of Astronomy. The committee considers this to be a broad research domain with elements that may be algorithmic, computational, or mathematical, and informed by substantive subject-matter considerations. This position is part of a campus-wide cluster initiative to deepen UW-Madison leadership in Multi-messenger Astrophysics and provide opportunities to contribute to the intellectual community that supports the UW Madison IceCube Neutrino Observatory. This hiring initiative involves the Departments of Astronomy, Physics, and Statistics. Individuals from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful applicants will join a leading statistics department, to engage in research, teaching, and graduate student training in Data Science and Statistics.

Principal duties:
The incumbent will teach Statistics and/or Data Science courses; participate in the training of graduate students; conduct research; publish in academic journals in Statistics, Data Science, Astronomy, and closely related fields and present them at national and international meetings; and participate in professional and university service and outreach. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain extramural funding.

Education:

Required
PhD in Statistics or related field

Qualifications:

Scholarly research record and teaching experience preferred. Demonstrated excellence or demonstrated potential for excellence in research, broadly defined. Interest and ability to teach data science or statistics classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ability to interact with an interdisciplinary and collaborative intellectual community.

Our field and our department are growing rapidly, fueling our excitement for the future of our discipline, and creating an eager desire among our faculty to attract candidates from diverse backgrounds and interests. The Department has 26 regular faculty members, over 100 PhD students, roughly 150 MS students, and over 500 undergraduate majors in statistics and data science. Some faculty members have joint appointments in other departments. The Department is well known for its strong interplay between statistical theory, methodology, and practice. The University of Wisconsin-Madison ranks among the top universities in the country in research expenditures and provides excellent support for faculty seeking external funding. Internal research support is available from funds provided by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation.
