Information Studies department is seeking a part time faculty who can teach IST 452: Advanced Computer Networking: This course presents a hands-on experience to networking and the underlying protocols of the Internet and emphasizes concepts and skills required to design large scale networks with converged traffic of data, voice and video in wired and wireless environments. This course is designed to help students critically examine how individuals, groups, and society create and are created by digital data and algorithms, and the role of technology and data in everyday life.

Course learning objectives include
  • Recognize the devices and services that are used to support communications across networks
  • Use network models to explain the layers of communications in data networks
  • Describe the protocols and services provided by the OSI and TCP /IP models
  • Explain the critical role routers play in enabling communications across multiple networks
  • Describe the purpose, nature, and operations of internet’s Border Gateway Routing Protocol ( BGP )
  • Describe today’s increasing network security threats and explain the need to implement a comprehensive security policy to mitigate the threats
  • Identify and describe the purpose of the components in a small wireless network. ( SSID, BSS, ESS )
  • Describe VPN technology (importance, benefits, role, impact, components)
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required in a Computer Science or Information Technology related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Related Degree, Credential, and/or Occupational Experience in: Computer Information Systems, Computer Networking, Computer Science, Computing, Information Technology, Computer Systems Analyst, Software Systems Developer, Web Developer, Database Administrator, Network Systems Administrator.
  • At least three (3) years of related work experience. Previous experience teaching in higher education is preferred.
  • Industry certifications in one or more of the following: Network+, A+, Server+, CCNA, CCNP, Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker, MCSE, CISSP and Linux+ preferred.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Have strong knowledge of key IT equipment, software, and infrastructure
  • Understands Active Directory, DNS / DHCP
  • Experienced with LAN / WAN environments Experience with Cisco routers, firewalls, and switches.
  • Have clear understanding of the wireless network technology.
  • Experience designing, installing, and/or administrating networking in business settings.
  • Experience developing and enforcing security strategies for networks and businesses.
  • Ability to build or enhance proficiency in the use of diverse methods of classroom technology, and innovative instructional/academic support systems and programs.
Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be prepared to serves as instructor and mentor, and be willing to work with the Professor of Record and other instructors teaching this class. This a turn-key course with developed syllabus, exercises, and texts, however, we seek individuals who can bring their own experiences to the course.
  • Collaborate with professor of record, who is responsible for creating the course syllabus and course content, as well as providing an overview of their overall vision for the course.
  • Attend onboarding and training with the iSchool’s Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning ( FCTL )
  • Making semester-by-semester updates to due dates
  • Maintain office hours and open communication with students.
  • Maintain the course in the Blackboard Learning Management system
  • Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner; provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Prepare for weekly in-person sessions with students
  • Prepare to offer the class in the spring 2022 semester on campus
