Assistant College Lecturer or Assistant Professor of Practice of Urban Studies

Position Description: Cleveland State University seeks to attract an active, culturally and academically diverse faculty of the highest caliber. The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs invites applications for the position of Assistant College Lecturer or Assistant Professor of Practice of Urban Studies. While the area of specialization is open; candidates with expertise in nonprofit management, local government management, public safety management, GIS, economic development, and/or urban studies are especially encouraged to apply.

The Levin College is nationally recognized by U.S. News and World Report in urban policy (#2), local government management (#16), nonprofit management (#23), and public management and leadership (#40). We prepare our graduates to lead in diverse and dynamic urban environments. Located in downtown Cleveland, the Levin College is home to several graduate and undergraduate programs and the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management, which provides professional development to the regions’ public sector and nonprofit leaders.

Normally, the successful candidate will teach four courses per semester (fall and spring) and complete other assigned service activities. Opportunities for summer teaching with additional compensation also may be available. After the first year, the position will be annually renewable for five additional years based on performance, programmatic needs, and university finance. After a successful sixth-year review, and upon approval by the Provost and the Dean of the College, the position may be eligible for two successive three-year reappointments, followed by another six-year reappointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • For appointment as an Assistant College Lecturer position, a master’s degree in urban studies, public administration, or a related field with ten (10) or more years of relevant professional public service experience is required OR a Ph.D. in urban studies, public administration, or a related field. ABD candidates must complete all requirements for the Ph.D. by July 1, 2022.
  • For appointment as an Assistant Professor of Practice include a related graduate degree from an accredited university (see above) and ten (10) or more years of relevant professional experience. A Ph.D. may be substituted for up to five (5) years of relevant professional experience.
  • Essential for each position is a commitment to student achievement and fostering a diverse student population.
  • The successful candidate will not be expected to conduct research, but rather focus on teaching and service areas that align with the needs of the Levin College. Therefore, the successful candidate will demonstrate an ability and commitment to develop high-quality courses and contribute to program management.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Professional experience that demonstrates teaching ability/potential is preferred (e.g., leading professional development training, teaching college-level courses, coaching and mentoring, professional presentations, and/or related activities). 
  • The ability to contribute to more than one degree program (e.g., urban studies, public administration, nonprofit management, organizational leadership, environmental studies, economic development, GIS, and/or public safety management). 
  • For the Assistant Professor of Practice — A demonstrated record of thought leadership within their professions is preferred.
