Mission or Goal of Unit: Children’s Hospital of Richmond of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System has committed itself to transforming the General Pediatric Department into a model academic unit devoted to excellence in clinical care, teaching, and clinical, translational, and basic research.

Chief Purpose of this position: The Department would like to create a Primary Care Faculty Scholar position to provide leadership, training, and research opportunities for a graduating resident with interests in the intersection of pediatrics and population health, family medicine, and internal medicine. There is support from the respective departments in pursuing such a fellowship, and there is precedence in having such a fellowship within similar academic medical centers.

Position Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Responsibilities
: The expectation is that this position would be 50% clinical with 4 clinics per week, some newborn nursery time and shared call. The position would have 50% unfunded research time. We have structured this position and salary amount of $70,000 in alignment with the Department’s two chief resident positions, which are also non-ACGME positions. These positions provide highly sought-after leadership and training opportunities and create visibility for the institution at the national level. All clinical work that the fellow does is billable, showing a positive proforma and return on income for the investment.
2. Research Responsibilities : The fellow will be expected to meet at least monthly with their primary mentor. The fellow will develop a scholarly oversight committee that will assist with career development and meet with them on a quarterly basis to follow their progress. The fellow will participate in weekly research team meetings with the Ambulatory Care Outcomes Research Network.
3. Educational Responsibilities : The fellow will lead Yale curriculum sessions with the residents on various primary care topics and be expected to do bedside teaching of residents and medical students in outpatient and inpatient settings.

Required Qualifications:

Board certified or board eligible in General Pediatrics
Experience with clinical care of patients ages birth to 21
Experience with education of house-staff, medical students, and others
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty scholar at VCU.
