Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking to hire an Energy Manager in Facilities Management.

The Energy Manager is the point of contact for consumption, utility spending, and performance metrics for VCU buildings. The Energy Manager is primarily responsible for E&G buildings; VCU reports metrics for all buildings for which we pay the utility bill. The Energy Manager owns the Energy Utilization Index (EUI), our primary metric for reporting. We also strive to expand our electric metering program, top ten consumer dashboards, and work closely with Sustainability on GHG emission sources and reductions.

The Energy Manager is responsible for implementing improvements to buildings to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency and climate change resiliency as per the Code of Virginia.

Responsibilities include:
  • Maintain the budget/KPI spreadsheet as well as historical HDD/CDD records
  • Prepare for quarterly utility meetings including review with Steam Plant
  • Work with Steam Plant to prepare effective operating and MR budget spreadsheets as well as KPI reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director, Financial Services where necessary
  • Create, manage, and report on key performance indicators using EnergyCAP
  • Create, manage, and update dashboards to report our performance via website
  • Act as primary contact for Dominion regarding electrical outages/rates/load letters; work with Dominion to update their customer database
  • Act as primary contact for City of Richmond DPU; natural gas, water, storm
  • Actively manage the building names and data relationships in EnergyCAP
  • Support Sustainability as a data resource for reporting
  • Collaborate with Finance unit to establish realistic forward utility budgets for new buildings
  • Miss Utility point of contact
  • Support steam plant water chemistry documentation/review
  • Work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team to develop useful maps representing energy performance as well as building ownership such as E&G, Health System, P&T, etc.
  • Monitor rules, regulations, and standards at State level with respect to laws and regulations; prepare executive summaries to help inform other units within FMD
  • Interact with team to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas to improve organizational efficiency at group and departmental levels
  • Stay informed on all applicable energy codes and standards, particularlyl ASHRAE 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code
  • Participate on team that monitors commodity pricing and energy procurement; recommend price locks on commodity/basis; maintain contact with energy marketer; Share EIA updates with manager
  • Working with the team, train, and learn to be the subject matter expert (SME) on at least five engineering topics such as fire alarm systems, fault detection, plumbing, steam plant, generators, BIM, GIS, Revit, chillers, automation, vivariums, lab safety, boilers, etc.
  • Document workload and tasks on Unit SmartSheet
  • Document a career development plan annually and provide training options to manager; consider at least one course from APPA, Tradeline, and/or I2SL
Minimum Hiring Standards

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities, budget preparation, and fiscal management
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical and electrical systems
  • Knowledge of building commissioning practices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite tools
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Experience with Energy Modeling software such as Trane Trace
  • Bachelor's degree or other advanced degree in Engineering or energy-related field required
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with energy management programs is required
  • Virginia Driver's license required
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Financial experience and utility management experience preferred
  • Energy Management experience in education sector preferred
  • Experience with capital budget/development and code compliance preferred
  • An understanding of financial analysis, rate setting, and life cycle costing preferred
  • Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP) certification preferred
  • Professional Engineering (PE) registration preferred
Required Licensure/Certifications
  • AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Valid Virginia Driver's license
