Assistant Professor in Economic History (since 1750) (HIST22-1)

We are looking for a scholar of exceptional ability to join our internationally renowned Department of History as an Assistant Professor of Economic History. We welcome applications from historians with research and teaching interests in the broad field of economic history, encompassing any region of the globe since 1750 CE. This might include any aspect of economic history or associated fields such as (but not limited to) financial, monetary, and business history, and any specialism within economic history such as demography and mortality, family and the household, agriculture and industry, inequality and human capital, and markets and institutions. However, in order to complement existing strengths and areas of interest within the department and the wider university, we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with a focus on environmental history and/or an interest in regional economic history with the potential to make use of local archives. Expertise in quantitative methods, in order to strengthen our provision on the MA in Social and Economic History and build further links with the Durham Research Methods Centre, is also desirable.

Economic history has a proud tradition at Durham, and previous members of the Department of History working in the field include Richard Britnell, Ranald Michie, Howell Harris and Ben Dodds. Successful candidates will join a thriving community of economic and social historians, which includes Julie Marfany, Alex Brown, Adrian Green, Chris Courtney, Julie-Marie Strange, and Andrzej Olechnowicz, whose diverse and wide-ranging research interests extend from medieval English economic history through to modern Chinese environmental history.
