Assistant Teaching Professor of Academic and Technical Writing

The Academic and Technical Writing Program at the University of Victoria (https://www.uvic.ca/humanities/atwp/index.php) invites applications for a continuing-appointment eligible position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor to commence 1 July 2022. The successful candidate will be appointed into the Faculty of Humanities.

The primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

• To teach courses that fulfill or are closely allied with the University’s Academic Writing Requirement (AWR) – ATWP 101 (Fundamentals of Academic Literacy), ATWP 135 (Academic Reading and Writing), ENGR 110 (Design and Communication 1), ENGR 120 (Design and Communication 2), and/or ENGR 240 (Technical Writing) – and other courses as program/teaching needs evolve and as assigned by the program Director;
• To work with a team of instructors and faculty to develop and deliver new Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing in the Disciplines (WID) course offerings;
• To help support the professional development and training of new instructors, including graduate students.

Normally, the teaching assignment for an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Faculty of Humanities is 7 courses per academic year (which may be distributed on a 3-3-1 schedule).

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have

• An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant field (such as Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Composition, Professional Writing, Technical Writing, Linguistics, or English);
• Demonstrated experience teaching university and/or college writing, especially at the first- and/or the second-year level;
• Interest in teaching technical writing as well as other WID courses;
• Demonstrated interest in and evidence of engagement with research in areas related to Writing Studies, Rhetoric, Composition, and/or Scholarship of Teaching and Learning;
• Demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently within a complex program;
• Demonstrated evidence of service, particularly in the form of curriculum development and instructor training;
• Experience with or evidence of potential for administrative and/or academic leadership;
• Interest in ongoing learning and professional development in the field of Academic and/or Technical Writing.

The following will be considered assets:

• Demonstrated experience teaching technical writing at the undergraduate level;
• Demonstrated teaching experience with Indigenous students and/or research interest in Indigenous pedagogies;
• Demonstrated teaching experience with and/or research interest in student writers for whom English is an Additional Language;
• Demonstrated research interest in anti-racist pedagogies;
• Published research in Writing Studies or a related field;
• Demonstrated experience with teaching online and/or hybrid courses;
• Experience working as a professional or technical writer.

• A 1- to 2-page statement on your philosophy for teaching writing that includes discussion of efforts to support diversity and accessibility in the classroom;
• A selection of documents that exemplify claims made in the teaching philosophy statement and offer evidence of helping students grow as writers in academic and/or technical writing classes. These documents may take the form of course outlines, assignment prompts, and/or other teaching materials as well as course evaluation data, teaching observations, and/or student testimonials.
