Job Summary:
Salt Lake Community College strives to transform the lives of

Associate Vice President for Student Success will be a leader in
SLCC’s effort to be a model for inclusive and transformative
education and student services, strengthening the communities it
serves through the success of our students.
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment
Management, the Associate Vice President for Student Success (AVP)
provides critical vision, leadership, and active management to
support student success at Salt Lake Community College.
The AVP for Student Success will be a leader first –
striving to develop others and be forward thinking in SLCC’s
approach to academic advising, career services, diversity and
multicultural affairs, orientation, summer bridge program, TRiO
and PACE programs, and the Thayne Center for Student
Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement. The AVP will
excel at collaborating with college and community partners to
strategically align initiatives that advance organizational goals,
while developing others and building a cohesive team.
To be successful, the AVP will need to excel at: (1)
leading, developing, and managing multiple areas, including
developing and supervising directors and managers in charge of
those areas, (2) planning and leading strategic student service
efforts that increase enrollment, retention, and completion, and
(3) foster partnerships with college and community leaders and
other higher education systems.
This is an at-will position.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Provide executive leadership, budgetary oversite and supervision
for the following areas: academic advising, career services,
diversity and multicultural affairs, orientation, summer bridge
program, TRiO and PACE programs, and the Thayne Center
for Student Life, Leadership, and Community Engagement.
The AVP also provides leadership and vision for projects
as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs and
Enrollment Management.
Work collaboratively with all areas of the College to identify and
support key institutional efforts involving student recruitment,
retention, and success. Lead and assist with assessment of student
development and student success services and resources that result
in elevating current services resources and developing new services
and resources that enhance overall student experience and
satisfaction. Collaborate with internal and external partners to
identify needed programs, services, and resources that build
institutional capacity and sustainability and ultimately support
students throughout the stages of the student life-cycle and close
the completion gap.
Build and maintain good working relationships throughout the
College and partner institutions within USHE, other relevant
colleges and universities, and appropriate community
partners.
Provide leadership for the College’s student success unit.
Establish goals and strategies for achieving and evaluating
objectives including reviews trends related to student services and
student centers. Work collaboratively with senior staff to assess
the College’s current efforts and to recommend and implement
improvements.
Represent the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment
Management as needed and requested both internally and externally.
Serve on College, Utah Board of Higher
Education, USHE and other community and professional
association committees and tasks forces as needed.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs
and Enrollment Management.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Proven understanding, experience, and commitment to a comprehensive community college and student success philosophy
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner with faculty, administrators and staff, students and external groups in both individual and group settings.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner with higher education partners, public school partners, community-based entities and other organizations to support and retain students; with a particular focus on the retention and success of minority and under-served populations.
- Demonstrated ability to lead implementation of best practices that foster innovation in support of Salt Lake Community College’s mission, vision, and values.
- Demonstrated expertise in strategic and tactical planning, including budgeting and financial analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in data analysis and date-informed decision-making.
- Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective organizational, management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize work flow, manage multiple projects and functions.
- Ability to provide leadership and direct others and to maintain a collegial and constructive environment based on open communication and positive team building.
- Ability to operate in a multi-campus environment
- Ability to understand and implement support for the College’s strategic plan.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of SLCC and USHE policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Higher Education or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Familiarity with accreditation guidelines from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities or similar regional accrediting body.
- Extensive experience supporting student recruitment, retention, and completion of community college students.
- Extensive experience with partnership building.
- Expertise with student development theory.
- Bilingual
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s degree in related field required from a regionally accredited institution.
- Five (5) years of paid, progressively responsible, higher education administrative experience. This experience should include evidence of significant budget and personnel management responsibilities.
- Extensive knowledge of student services and student center best practices and standards.
- Demonstrated success working with students, staff, and faculty on programmatic and services that promote student recruitment, retention, and completion.
