Farmingdale State College - RF - CSTEP Counselor - CSTEP Program
The Research Foundation for The State University of New York (RF) is the largest comprehensive university-connected research foundation in the country. It exists to serve the State University of New York (SUNY) by providing essential administrative services that enable SUNY faculty to focus their efforts on the education of students and the performance of life-changing research across a wide range of disciplines including medicine, engineering, physical sciences, energy, computer science, and social sciences. The RF is a private non-profit education cor¬poration that is tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c) (3).
The Research Foundation supports the advancement of education, research, and discovery at the State University of New York (SUNY) Established in 1951, the RF carries out its responsibilities pursuant to a formal contract with SUNY that has been in force since 1977.
Separate from SUNY, the RF is able to form partnerships that enhance SUNY's education, research, and public service mission, and spur economic development across New York State. The primary service offered by the RF is sponsored programs administration. The infrastructure in place for sponsored programs allows for RF to also administer agency funds and assist campuses with establishing affiliated corporations.
The Research Foundation at Farmingdale State College (FSC) seeks a full-time Counselor for the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) to work with historically underrepresented students pursuing STEM majors.
The CSTEP Counselor will be responsible for helping to ensure that all program contract requirements are satisfied, student enrollment is maintained, and student service provision is effective and within grant accordance. The Counselor will provide personal development, academic, career, and financial aid guidance to an assigned caseload of students. The Counselor will also assist students in their preparation for internships, research opportunities, and post-graduation plans. The Counselor will support the CSTEP mentor and tutoring programs as well as the CSTEP Advisory Board. The Counselor will help facilitate group services such as workshops, special events, and Summer Bridge programming for incoming first-year students. The Counselor will also assist managing the program's social media presence and website. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the Director or department Executive Director, as appropriate.
More specifically, the Counselor will:
Meet individually and in small groups with students to provide personal, academic, career guidance, and assist with implementation of intervention plans
Maintain data records such as student rosters, tracking program engagement, etc.
Assist with recruitment of student applicants and determine program eligibility
Help students prepare applications for research opportunities, internships, graduate school, etc.
Work collaboratively with campus departments such as Financial Aid, Registrar, and academic offices to provide wraparound student services
Coordinate and chaperone occasional field trips to STEM industry locations, graduate school visits, annual CSTEP conference, etc.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related STEM field
Experience working within a college-related setting supporting historically disadvantaged students or other program with similar mission
Relevant experience providing support student development and success services for historically disadvantaged college populations
Strong data management (i.e. student rosters, program engagement levels, etc.) skills
Excellent oral and written communication abilities
Ability to work occasional evenings and overnight travel for program events
Proficiency with social media platforms, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree
Creative, organized, and motivated individual passionate about student development
Adaptable and able to work with various constituents including college faculty, community stakeholders, etc.
