Scope of Job:
The primary purpose of the Director, Division of Genetics is to provide broad direction and coordination of all activities within the Division The chosen candidate will be responsible for: overseeing recruitment and retention of faculty and staff within the Division; establishing standards of academic, educational, and clinical performance; and leading strategic planning for research and for clinical activities in the Division. The successful candidate will foster an environment that values the development and facilitation of quality clinical and research programs. The successful candidate also will promote and facilitate integration of clinical care, research, and education within the Division. Current genetics faculty in the Department of Pediatrics include one assistant professor clinical geneticist whose is focus on care of patients with biochemical disorders. The present faculty member is the only physician in the RGV who cares for such patients. Clinical responsibilities for the Division Chief will include evaluation and management of patients with inborn errors of metabolism and other genetic disorders in outpatient and inpatient settings. The chosen candidate will have a secondary appointment in the Department of Human Genetics. The faculty in Department of Human Genetics are a world class group of researchers with state-of-the-art facilities distributed across South Texas. The Department of Human Genetics has outstanding capabilities in genome sequencing and other omics approaches, with laboratories in Brownsville, McAllen, and San Antonio. A Ph.D. program in Human Genetics is scheduled to launch in the fall of 2022. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the Ph.D. program and to conduct collaborative research in the Department of Human Genetics. The selected candidate will provide a balanced and integrated educational program for the students, residents or other trainees who may rotate through the Division.

Minimum Qualifications:
The applicant should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in academic medical genetics. The candidate must be board certified in Genetics and must hold or be eligible for a Texas Medical License.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
