The Department of English at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a visiting writer specializing in creative writing with a primary focus in creative nonfiction. The one-year appointment will be effective August 2022 and carries with it the possibility of an additional one-year reappointment. The teaching load is a 3/3.

Candidates who will add to the diversity of our faculty are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must hold an MFA or PhD in Creative Writing by August 2022 and have college-level teaching experience. Subspecialties in African American Literature or Diaspora Studies, Southern Literature, or cross-genre subspecialties are welcome as this position offers the opportunity to collaborate with the Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies. The successful candidate will have significant creative nonfiction publications in literary journals and/or at least one published book of creative nonfiction. The individual hired for this position will have the opportunity to teach graduate courses in the Master of Arts in Writing program, undergraduate creative nonfiction workshops, and introductory creative writing courses. The position also includes opportunities to work on Waccamaw, Coastal Carolina’s online literary journal, and to contribute to the department’s visiting writers series.

The Department of English (https://www.coastal.edu/english/) aspires to create a diverse and inclusive community of scholars that promote reading and writing critically through an open exchange of ideas so that our students can better understand—and write perceptively on—the historical, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions of language and literature. Furthermore, we are committed to innovative teaching and strongly encourage the development of experiential and multimodal learning. The department offers two majors: the B.A. in English and the B.A. in Digital Culture and Design. We also offer six minors and house the M.A. in Writing program, which prepares students for careers in writing, editing, and publishing or for further graduate study in M.F.A. or Ph.D. programs.
