Full-Time Faculty

Candidates are invited to apply for multi-year, non-tenure-track, open-rank faculty positions at the National Defense College of the United Arab Emirates (NDC), an accredited institution offering graduate-level degrees to senior military officers and civilians in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Successful candidates will

  • teach courses in domestic and international security and strategy
  • provide advising and mentoring to participants within the institution
  • conduct research in their fields of expertise
  • participate in service, outreach, and partnership-building
  • teaching short courses for executive education
  • help define and support the future development of the National Defense College.

More information about the college can be found at the NDC website (http://www.ndc.ac.ae/en/).

The teaching load of the College is capped at 18 credits, though NDC endeavors to limit teaching to 12 credits when possible. Candidates should be able to contribute to three or more core courses in the existing interdisciplinary curriculum and develop a new elective in their area of expertise. (http://www.ndc.ac.ae/en/core-courses). Candidates should also be able to contribute to doctoral level teaching in at least one of the following areas: security/strategy, diplomacy/international law, political economy, leadership, and research methods (qualitative and/or mixed). NDC follows a seminar model in graduate teaching, so the ability to lead facilitated seminars of 10-15 participants is essential.

Research expectations are one peer-reviewed article, book chapter, or the equivalent, per year.

Candidates must possess a terminal degree (PhD) from an accredited university in an appropriate discipline (including but not limited to history, political science, security studies, sociology, economics, business, and leadership) by the position’s start date. An active research agenda is also required. Rank will be determined by teaching experience and research profile. Previous military or government service is an asset but cannot substitute for an earned doctorate. Arabic language proficiency is an asset but courses will be conducted in English.

Benefits package includes a competitive salary and full health insurance for the entire family plus allowances for housing, transportation, mobile phone, education for eligible minor children, cost of living, and relocation.

The start date will be August 1, 2022.

In order to apply for the position, please include the following documents:

  • A cover letter detailing qualifications in teaching, research, and service, including identifying which courses in our curriculum the candidate is qualified to teach
  • A CV, including a list of professional references
  • Unofficial graduate transcripts (copies are acceptable)
  • All documents should be sent to Ms. Beatrice Boutros at (boutros@translangltd.com).

Applications should be submitted by 22 December, 2021. The college anticipates conducting phone/video interviews in early 2022. Review of applications will continue until the position(s) are filled. Due to the volume of applicants, only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
