Assistant Professor of Illustration

The Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in the Illustration Department to begin teaching in the fall of 2022. The department offers a BFA in Illustration and Minors in Illustration and Animation within the Hartford Art School’s comprehensive undergraduate program accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Illustration Department emphasizes drawing, proficiency with traditional and digital media, and visual problem-solving skills in a rigorous program focused on developing professional competencies for the illustration market.

The successful candidate will be a recognized professional practitioner of illustration and a passionate educator with knowledge of both historic traditions and current trends in illustration. The applicant must have a high level of knowledge of figure drawing, a strong understanding of illustration business practices and exceptional skill with traditional illustration media. The candidate will bring enthusiasm and rigor to the program, and possess a strong commitment to community and collegiality. Candidates who demonstrate an appreciation for and/or the ability to work with diverse student populations will be given preference. An MFA or equivalent professional illustration experience is required, and experience teaching illustration to undergraduate college students, graduate students or professional illustrators is also essential. The position requires teaching three courses each semester, typically at the sophomore through senior levels of the undergraduate illustration program, but subject to the needs of the department and school. The ideal candidate would have the ability to teach figure drawing, oil painting techniques, the business practices of illustration, and advertising or editorial illustration. Expectations include advising, art school and university committee service, recruitment, program development, and an ongoing production record of creative or research activities that will meet tenure requirements.
