Job Summary:

This position is responsible for conducting and disseminating impactful research scholarship, delivering rigorous lecture, studio, and seminar instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Assistant or Associate Professor will provide leadership in recruiting, teaching, and mentoring of graduate students, and to advise students on academic and career choices. The Interior Architecture (IA) program utilizes a co-teaching model for studio instruction, where practice- and research-focused faculty equally contribute to student's learning experiences.

The position is responsible for developing a nationally competitive research program relevant to the multidisciplinary field of Environmental Design Research, with an emphasis on the dynamic relationship between people and their physical, social, and cultural environment. The Assistant or Associate Professor will provide experience and expertise in one or more of the following thematic areas:

Environmental Systems and Human Comfort: The ability to offer knowledge and insights on critical building components (e.g., lighting, color, products, materials) and related regulations and codes, particularly focusing on their impact on sustainability and human wellbeing

Design Thinking & Strategy: The ability to apply design thinking methods and take an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving which involves humans and the built environment.

Human-Centered Design: The ability to engage issues of human health and wellbeing in relation to building design across building types, specifically focusing on diverse human needs across the human life span (e.g., childhood, mid-life, aging, etc.) or on special populations (e.g., disability).

Technology integration: The ability to integrate noble technology (Virtual Reality, wearable tech, IoT, smart home systems) into the design and research process to explore issues of human health and wellbeing in buildings.

Cultural Diversity and environmental justice: The ability to engage issues of equity, affordable accommodations, community-based design processes, and to promote diversity through a global perspective and locally sensitive design processes.

Design Pedagogy: The ability to explore the teaching of theory and application in the design of product, services, and environment.

This position is expected to participate in department service, such as curriculum development, award jurying, advising, faculty meeting attendance, and serving on dissertation committees. In addition, service to the college, university and the profession is expected.

Required
PhD or other terminal degree
Broader field of design with at least one undergraduate or graduate degree from the Environmental Design (interior design, architecture and other allied fields)

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
Years of experience will be commensurate with the rank sought. All candidates must have proven success in conducting research and teaching appropriate for their stage of career.
- Assistant professor candidates must have a PhD degree at time of application, or official notification of completion of the degree by August 22, 2022. Assistant professor candidates should have at least 3 years of post-graduate teaching experience in higher education, which could include instructing as a Teaching Assistant or Lecturer Student Assistant.
- Associate professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure and professorial rank standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the School of Human Ecology.

The ability to lead a research program that attracts external funding individually and/or through active collaboration, that actively attracts and engages graduate students, and that produces high-impact scholarship.

The ability to teach Interior Architecture studio, seminar, and lecture courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels including, but not limited to, current knowledge on design communication technology and willingness to stay up to date.

Demonstrated experience at creating process-driven, research-based, human-centered design solutions for a range of design challenges at a level appropriate for grad/undergrad studio teaching.

The ability to work effectively within a diverse community, and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

- NCIDQ certified or eligible
- 3 years of professional practice in the field of Design.

Design Studies Department: The Design Studies Department currently houses two undergraduate programs (the Interior Architecture & the Textile and Fashion Design) and a graduate program that offers MFA and Ph.D. degrees in the broader field of design. The Interior Architecture program is an internationally recognized program known for its innovative interdisciplinary research and broad-based professional education. Its mission is to combine research and design practice to improve people's lives through human-centered design within the built environment. The program prepares students to become independent thinkers by promoting critical reflection on alternative ways of living, to become effective problem-solvers in the field of Interior Architecture, to develop interdisciplinary aptitude for solving pressing issues in contemporary design practices, and to become design leaders as stewards and visionaries of the public realm by fostering socially responsible and collaborative design thinking. The program is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), with the next accreditation visit scheduled for 2023. The Design Studies Department provides excellent technology and design resources; these include the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery-Virtual Environment Group (Virtual Environments) as well as campus maker spaces, which provide opportunities to collaborate on teaching and research.

SCHOOL OF HUMAN ECOLOGY: The mission of the School of Human Ecology is to understand the complex relationships and interdependence among individuals, groups and families, and to focus on quality-of-life issues through research, creative innovation, education, and outreach. The School has four academic departments (Civil Society and Community Studies, Consumer Science, Design Studies, and Human Development & Family Studies) with a collective undergraduate enrollment of 1,600 students, and 100+ graduate students.
