The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-earning assistant professor in Expanded Approaches to Studio Arts. The anticipated start date is August 8, 2022.

SVAD is seeking an imaginative practicing artist with an active and distinctive record of creative studio work. The successful candidate will demonstrate sustained research activity and provide evidence of a growing national or international exhibition record.

SVAD seeks a candidate with a focus in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches to contemporary research-based studio practices. We are seeking an artist whose practice balances traditional processes and innovative, contemporary approaches. These could include evolving technologies, social practice, and/or recontextualizing material practices historically excluded from the canon. Applicants should demonstrate a keen conceptual understanding of their practice and its location in the complex shifting landscape of historical and contemporary art.

We are interested in an artist with a creative practice that challenges established paradigms; this practice could engage with analyses of race, indigeneity, colonialism, ableism, environmental issues, migration, diaspora, amongst others. At SVAD, we believe in the inextricable tie between diversity and excellence. We are committed to deepening our engagement with underrepresented groups within our global community.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach within their area of focus and across the studio art curriculum, with the potential of developing new approaches that invigorate our existing program and prepare our students to shape the future of contemporary practices.

Our MFA program is establishing itself as one that has graduated successful artists and educators working across the country in studio practices, teaching positions, and arts industry careers. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability and eagerness to work with our MFA students. We expect each faculty member to be an exemplar, insightful mentor, and guide for their post-graduate future.

The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 course load in addition to sustaining an active studio practice and exhibition record. The successful candidate will also perform departmental and university service, as well as service to the profession, and participate in campus and community life to promote the college mission and to promote a collegial and collaborative environment.

SVAD, within the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH), and UCF supports and rewards teaching and research excellence and offers BFA degrees in Studio Arts and Emerging Media and B.A. degrees in Studio Arts, Art History, Architecture, and Visual Arts Management and MFA degrees in Studio Art and Design and in Animation and Visual Effects. SVAD’s Studio Arts degrees include Sculpture, Ceramics, Mixed Media, Installation/Performance Art, Photography, Drawing, Painting, Drawing/Painting, Drawing/Printmaking, Drawing/Illustration, and Book Arts.

UCF is home to a growing and diverse student population of over 70,000 students, almost 2,000 faculty, and more than 4,700 staff.  At UCF we are dedicated to access, and we are invested in identifying candidates who will contribute to our mission through equity-minded practice and culturally responsive pedagogy.
