Summary:

The Assistant Dean for Academic Finance is a senior level position that will provide operational management for a team of finance professionals with institutional impact. Ensures policy and legal compliance; manages professional staff; shares responsibility for planning, policy formation, and strategic implementation of programs and services. Collaborates with internal and external constituents to achieve overall strategic goals. Has a significant impact within the School of Medicine, influencing service delivery and operational goals. Exercises independent judgement for complex issues to ensure school objectives are met. Reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration, School of Medicine.

This position serves as the School of Medicine (SOM) budget director and top finance manager of academic budgets for the 19 clinical departments, 9 basic science administration, 10 affiliated centers & institutes and 20+Dean’s Office units. This position serves as the key contact and resident expert on the University Budget Model. The position has direct responsibility in six areas: 1) budget development for the SOM departments and units; 2) management of day-to-day fiscal operations of Dean’s Office units; 3) oversight of financial management of basic health science and clinical departments, 4) management of the Dean’s Office commitments and related fund sources, including funds maintained in the MCV Foundation, 5) reporting to VCU central budget office, and 6) developing reports on behalf of the Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration for external constituencies, including the AAMC, LCME, and other national organizations related to the financial performance of the School of Medicine.

Required Education and Experience

The successful candidate should have a master’s level degree in a related field with five years of work experience or a bachelor’s degree with comparable work experience in a related field such as accounting. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience working for a public college or university and/or an academic medical center is preferred. Successful candidates must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills. Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. CPA preferred.
