Job Summary
Duties for this position include trapping, immobilizing, and handling bears; using radio telemetry equipment ( GPS and VHF ) to track bear movements, locate bear dens, locate deceased bears, and retrieve collars that have fallen off; collect data on dens and the habitats; catch, handle, and mark cubs; set up and monitor hair snares and other techniques for non-invasive sampling of bears; set up and maintain game cameras; work closely with landowners to gain access to large amounts of property around the state of Alabama; supervise teams of field technicians; maintain equipment such as bear traps; record and organize data; analyze data using techniques that are appropriate and of quality expected in scientific research; write reports and manuscripts on activities and study results; interact closely with government and university personnel.
Essential Functions
1. Assists in the development of project proposals, plans and protocols.
2. Conducts routine or fundamental experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.
3. Assists with logistical considerations to include equipment, materials, and labor needs.
4. Collects data/samples related to others’ research and in routine cases.
5. Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.
6. Documents results and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
7. May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.
8. May instruct students and/or supervise others’ research in area of expertise.

Requirements for Additional Job Levels
Level II requires a Bachelors degree in discipline appropriate to position and 2 years experience.
Level III requires a Bachelor’s degree in discipline appropriate to position and 4 years experience, including at least 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.
