Job Description:
A research assistant position is available in the Laboratory of Neurogenetics & Neuroscience in the Department of Neurology, University of Florida to model the genetic basis of Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders in rodent models. This is an ideal opportunity for a recently graduated student to gain research experience during a gap year before continuing to graduate school. The applicant should show attention to detail and have a strong interest in learning. Evidence of clear communication and writing skills are important. Training will be provided in rodent surgery, laboratory research and quantitative methods necessary to fulfill the research goals of the lab. The following are the general duties and responsibilities for this position:
- Take all required trainings to work in neuroscientific research in rodent models (IACUC and AALAS).
- Take all necessary trainings to conduct research in a wet laboratory setting (Environmental Health and Safety)
- Assist the PI with subsequent laboratory compliance policies and procedures.
- Assist researchers in all necessary aspects of mouse modeling, including behavioral paradigms and accompanying data acquisition in several studies, and the collection, banking and processing of mouse tissue.
- Assist with the collection of high resolution microscope data from ex vivo fixed brain tissue of young and aged mice.
- Assist the PI in data storage/backup, image processing, analysis, and manuscript figure preparations.
- Work with the PI to draft grant reports including text write-up and/or editing, preparing high quality figures, and interim presentations.
- Attend meetings and be willing to report to our collaborative team on progress.
Expected Salary:
$14.00 to $16.00 per hour
Minimum Requirements:
Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong desire to learn.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related life science field.
