The School of Environmental Sustainability ( SES ) ( https://www.luc.edu/sustainability/ ) at Loyola University Chicago ( https://www.luc.edu/ ) invites applications for a full-time (9-month), tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, with a specific focus on renewable energy. Preference will be given to candidates that study and specialize in renewable energy technologies (e.g., bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, solar, wind, etc.) from a natural or applied science perspective, broadly defined. Loyola University Chicago is committed to environmental sustainability, having transformed its campuses to meet energy, water, and waste efficiencies that have consistently ranked the university in the top 5% of green campuses nationally. The SES is a new interdisciplinary school that serves nearly 400 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, located within a state-of-the-art geothermally heated and cooled building containing a greenhouse, aquaponics facilities, a biodiesel production facility, teaching and research labs, and a “green” dormitory. Loyola University Chicago prioritizes sustainability with 13 energy efficient LEED certified buildings, permeable pavement, green roof installations, and student-run urban gardens which supply the university’s farmer’s market. Overall, the SES strives to create solutions to the stress on our planet’s natural resources, expanding knowledge in the service of humanity through teaching, conducting research, and sponsoring outreach activities on pressing environmental issues.

The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally recognized research program in renewable energy that leads to high-quality academic journal publications with a focus on the decarbonization of energy systems, grid modernization, energy storage, smart energy systems, resiliency, or related areas. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in power system optimization, the system integration of renewables, energy sector data analytics, forecasting, and other areas of modeling and simulation related to renewables. Teaching responsibilities will include two courses per semester, including existing undergraduate and graduate courses in renewable energy, sustainability, and climate change, as well as the potential to develop new science-based and lab courses in the candidate’s area of expertise that support the School’s academic programs. Further, the successful candidate will pursue and obtain external funding, provide service to the university and discipline, and help build collaborative research partnerships within the SES, other academic units on campus (e.g., the Department of Engineering), and with external stakeholders.
