Postdoctoral Research Associate

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:
The Engen Lab at Northeastern University seeks an enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to start ideally in the fall of 2021. The research focus will be on the analysis of pharmaceutically relevant proteins and how they change conformation during function. The fully-funded appointment is for 2 years, but could extend beyond that in some circumstances.

Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to perform basic or applied research of a limited scope, using existing theories and methods. They will assist the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants, in maintaining the laboratory, and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. A primary responsibility is ensuring that research is completed. The postdoc is expected to write research papers, present research at meetings, contribute to research proposals, manage research data and software, and assist in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have strong problem-solving skills and be highly motivated. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely-related field. Previous experience with hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry is strongly desired. A keen interest in proteins and how they function is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Hands-on experience with ESI-Qtof and ESI-Tof mass spectrometers and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for the analysis of protein conformation; demonstrated proficiency in protein chemistry and protein biophysical analysis; strong technical expertise in modern chromatography methodologies and techniques; excellent communication, organization and time management skills. Previous experience with lipid membranes (vesicles and protein: ligand interactions), DNA manipulation, cloning/vector preparation and protein purification is preferred.

Salary Grade:
10

How to Apply:
Applications should contain a cover letter briefly describing candidate's background and specific research interests, a full CV with a publication list, Ph.D. completion date, and the names and contact information for three references who might be contacted for recommendations. Review of applications will begin immediately.

The initial appointment is for two years, with the potential for extension depending on regular progress evaluation and continuation of funding.

Additional Information:
Northeastern University is an equal opportunity employer, seeking to recruit and support a broadly diverse community of faculty and staff. Northeastern values and celebrates diversity in all its forms and strives to foster an inclusive culture built on respect that affirms inter-group relations and builds cohesion.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
