Department Summary
The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,200 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D., as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school also supports the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and interdisciplinary minors in Multimedia and Native Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 125 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as roughly 50 student employees. The School is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.
Position Summary
The Outreach and Events Manager delegates and oversees portions of projects related to communication, outreach, and recruitment to the Professional Master's Program Recruiter position, and reviews work for accuracy and completeness. This position then interprets and translates the project data to consult on communication and outreach strategies to the Associate Dean for SOJC Portland. This position reports to the Associate Dean and serves as project manager coordinating with the SOJC Communication and Development office, overseeing communications for the SOJC Portland and Agora programs. It requires skillful decision-making on aligning event/outreach strategies with priorities, communication/design requirements, and the SOJC brand. This position supervises student employees, assigning work and ensuring tasks are delegated appropriately to meet deadlines and project milestones.

Success will require a person who is detail-oriented, assertive, and self-directed, and who possesses excellent organizational skills, project management experience, public relations and writing skills. This position must demonstrate sound judgment with measurable indicators of outreach and event outcomes. Experience and skills in working effectively with media communities external to the SOJC is essential.

This position will require occasional work in the evenings and on weekends, based on business needs and event schedules.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Strategic Communications, Advertising, Public Relations, Business/Marketing, or a related degree.
  • Three years of experience in a higher education, non-profit, corporate, or similar environment supporting outreach and community engagement projects.
  • Three years experience in event coordination with demonstrated experience in managing project budgets.
    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated experience using Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Must possess strong financial and budgetary skills with the ability to manage multiple budget and project annual spending.

  • Must be detail-oriented, have excellent customer service, and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience as a project manager with simultaneous projects.
  • Experience planning and implementing communication plans for public relations campaigns and events.
  • Experience with recruitment.
  • Established relationship with media communities and constituents.
  • Knowledge of UO System and SOJC brand.
