DEFINITION: Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students and oversight from the METAS Executive Committee, the Student Affairs (SA) Generalist supports the Mentorship and Equity in Transitions to Achieve Student Success (METAS) program as part of a student support services team that provides integrated support services in key areas of student transition, including freshman to sophomore, sophomore to junior, in partnership with the METAS Advising Generalist and First Year Experience Program Specialist. The METAS Student Affairs Generalist will develop programs that target sophomore students and students in transition who have completed some college but have not earned a degree. The SA Generalist will collaborate with cross-divisional groups to ensure the activities and objectives of the grant are met and also provide additional staffing for evening and commuter student needs.
The METAS SA Generalist will utilize a solid understanding of a wide range of best practices for student support programs, CSU and CSUMB policies and procedures, campus resources, major and career choice support, course transferability from other institutions, and general financial aid regulations and procedures. To meet the needs of non-traditional and commuter students, this position will provide integrated student support services in person and online, including early morning and/or evening hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential Functions: Collaboration in Support of Student Success: (60%)

1. Develop and implement support services specifically for sophomore students with strategic and integrated efforts with First Year Experience, the METAS Advising Generalist, UROC, and Career Services.2. Collaborates with staff including academic and student success advisors, student support programs, veterans services, admissions, financial aid, first year experience, health and wellness services, and other student support programs to facilitate the seamless transition and timely graduation of sophomores, non-traditional, working, and commuter students.3. Provides leadership to the development and coordination of support and engagement programs for specific populations of students such as sophomores, commuter students and students facing barriers to degree completion. 4. Work closely with current and new peer mentoring programs, including supervision, to support their success.5. Coordinate with Student Affairs services such as Basic Needs and the CARE Team to assure access and support to students at times that are most convenient to them, including some early morning and evening times.6. Promotes a supportive environment, showing respect for all students and helping students recognize their cultural capital and personal strengths.7. Participates in and delivers workshops to support co-curricular learning for specific populations as well as for key events such as New Student Otter Orientation, Admitted Otter Day, as well as transfer events hosted by local community colleges.
Student Affairs Support:
(25%)

1. Provide Student Affairs services support to students at all levels, including campus policies and procedures, general education requirements, course registration and prerequisites, major requirements or changes, and other common concerns for continuing students.2. Provides telephone, zoom, and in-person pre-admissions guidance for prospective transfer students on a drop-in and/or appointment basis, including evening and online availability, recommends pre-transfer coursework and helps students understand possible post-transfer pathways. Helps students navigate the transfer ASSIST program.3. Provides Admissions advice, transcript review, and pre-admissions advising information on CSUMB admission practices and policies in support of applicants and prospects, particularly transfer and re-entry students. Financial Literacy: (10%)

1. Advises students individually and in groups on general financial aid and financial literacy issues; maintains current knowledge of policies and procedures pertinent to financial aid and satisfactory academic progress. 2. Provides telephone, zoom, and walk-in support in the evenings and/or early morning by responding to inquiries from students, parents, and other campus staff and faculty covering general financial aid questions.3. Understand and articulate key strategies for financial literacy, including conducting workshops to a variety of audiences. Other Functions: (5%)

1. Serves on appropriate METAS Committees and other campus committees and appropriate.2. Consults with colleagues at the Community College level as necessary.3. Stays abreast of best practices and benchmarks for retention, persistence, and graduation of students.4. Supervise student assistants and volunteers as needed.5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Office Location: CSUMB Main Campus Some flexibility to work from home with adequate internet connection and ergonomically sound and quiet workspace. This position requires working on campus with students, staff and faculty. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. Typical office environment with standard equipment and tasks. May be required to work remotely, and in the evening and some weekends. Position is required to work at a computer/video display terminal and desk for extended periods of time. Travel required between campus offices and off-campus locations. Must have their own transportation, valid driver's license, and auto insurance. Ability to lift 5-10 lbs

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of Student Services Programs or the ability to quickly acquire such knowledge. General knowledge of the policies, practices and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned; general knowledge of the principles, problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel and fiscal management. Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior and individual advising/counseling techniques. Working knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire knowledge, of CSUMB financial aid and admissions requirements and policies, academic programs, and transfer agreements. General knowledge of other student services and programs. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately, with excellent attention to detail, and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‐related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of a sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience, with at least one year in advising students individually or in groups, academic, career, or retention advising and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

Specialized Skills:
Ability and eligibility to complete California Defensive Driving certification. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
A master’s degree in a related field. Working knowledge and understanding of CSU and CSUMB student services, academic and financial aid policies and graduation requirements, transfer agreements. Knowledge and experience implementing best practices to improve access and retention of non-traditional students, including re-entry students, working adults, students with children, particularly low-income and first-generation students. Experience developing and evaluating new programs, and implementing long-range program improvements. Strong intercultural oral and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask, and follow through under general rather than direct supervision,

Working knowledge of student information systems such as CMS/PeopleSoft. Experience and competence with spreadsheets, website maintenance, online case management systems, and standard software such including both Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite, and expertise in video-conferencing software.

Special Conditions of Employment:
Work hours will be varied with a mix of early morning, afternoons and evenings, with occasional Saturday events such as New Student Orientation, Open House, and Admitted Student Day.

During campus remote operations, requires internet access during work hours (afternoon and evenings).
